All three of my Lugers, all chambered in 9mm, have a groove or shoulder in the chamber about 2/3s of the way in.
Any idea why this is? Are they all like that? EDIT: found an old thread in the archives Well, it's supposed to be like that and apparently was until 1942ish. It is a step and not a groove. 
No idea as to the "why". |

Georg Luger patented the offset obturation otherwise described as a 0.1mm
chamber step in 1910, to ensure the chamber sealed gasses when firing a tapered case like the 9mm Luger. |

Current Walther P99 and PPS pistols have this chamber configuration as well.
