So a previous thread got me thinking. Ive never owned a .40, I've only ever fired a Glock 23.
I easily fire 1200 rounds or more of 9mm per month (unless deployed) and several hundred rounds of 45. I'm always buying cheap and stacking it deep. I have several Glocks, BHP, 1911s, Beretta's, HK USP, the latest was a CZ SP01. Having never fired a CZ ever, in April the CZ vendor came to town and sold me in about 3 mags. So now I want a 40. Motivated by curiosity, boredom, and for logistical reasons. I have no desire for a 1911 in anything but 45. The HK I own doesn't even appeal to me. Don't really want a 4th Beretta. The M&P or FN pistols seem like obvious choices. A CZ 75 looks like it could be a good option, though my experience and knowledge of CZs is still really limited. So for the guys who have been shooting 40 S&W for years, what would get? Price range 500-700. |
|
I think you can get police trade in SIG P226 about that price.
|
|
|
The M&P is solid, can be had inexpensively (The LE/Military price in a basic .40 S&W M&P is $398), and was originally designed around the .40 rather than being a converted 9x19. In my experience the M&P40 is a softer shooter than the .40 S&W Glocks and just as reliable.

Too many years of glock kool-aid I guess. I found the m&p less controllable |

You can find good condition police trade-in Gen. 3 Glock 22s for under $350 shipped on GunBroker with three magazines and night sights. If you want a cheap, turn key .40 S&W, or a good base for a project gun, it's a no-brainer. Ask me how I know.

|
I agree with Augee, Glock .40's seem to be the low buck, but good option at present.
But FWIW, I've heard it said that a Browning HiPower and .40 caliber go together really well. Just a thought. |
|
I was never a Glock guy till the state of Iowa made me carry one. Buy the 23 see if you can get a blue lable if you are MIL LE or FD you might get police price. I like the gen 3 better than the gen 4 gun for carry due to rough texture of gen 4 grip. I relieve the back of the trigger guard with a dremel round sander for better grip feel. Glock makes 22 round mags that fit.

Not to be antagonistic, but you really should try .40 in the 1911( or pony up for a 2011). RIA makes single and double stack .40's 1911/2011's(para style). My only other .40 is a g35, easy shooting, simple manual of arms. I don't do DA unless it revolves.

Glock 22/23 or a Sig P226.
You can easily find agency/police trade-ins in your price range. I have a few 23s but always wanted to try a Sig (versus my USP). I bought a Sig 226 from CDNN for $409 and liked it so much I got another one (for training) but it had gone up to $449 (LNIB with 2xMags, manual, etc.) I bought a third one from Recoil Gunworks for $489 IIRC and it was just the gun in a box () but still like new. |
|
I'd do the following
USP Fullsize G22/G35 Hi-Power Beretta 96 Brigader Sig SP2022 CZ-75B They're all fantastic platforms |
|
I am a big fan of .40. My go to pistol's are Springfield XD's in .40, although not the most popular I would go outside the box and recommend those. You also cant beat the LEO trade in Glock 22/23's and SIg 226/229 handgun's for the price...
|
|
Just picked up a FN at Academy for 197....
It is like a Sig raped a glock. It falls right between....Perfect mix of light but still tames recoil. |
|
|
I got one of the Summit G22's. Excellent gun for the price. Only issue was the sights were dim.
From what is sounds, I believe you need a P229 or P226 in .40. Then get a .357SIG barrel. |
|
EDC choice is a CZ P07 in .40 S&W, almost the most accurate semi auto handgun I've ever fired (most accurate goes to my CZ P09 9MM).
If you want a range gun the P09 in .40 S&W is longer/taller than the P07 and you won't believe it's a "snappy" .40 when you shoot it. And P09's in .40 S&W are going cheap right now. |
|
Wait for a Gen 4 22 trade in for $350ish, or pick up a trade in P226 for $450-500. I got both
If you end up wanting to shoot 9mm, a Lone Wolf 40-9 barrel is < $100 for the Glock or you could get a 9mm X-Change kit for the Sig ($300ish) |
|
You really can't go wrong with an M&P40 or a Glock 23 (personally, I'm an M&P guy). Get one of them and add a Storm Lake 9mm barrel for versatility and you'll be very happy
|
|
G23 or some flavor of USP. There's all sorts of police trade in UPSs out there right now for around $500

I found the G23 a miserable little whore to shoot in .40. The G22 may be better but I won't be the guy to find out.
Of the .40s I've owned, M&P, P320, Berettas, XDs all were much more comfortable to shoot than the Glocks. I sold my USP because it was a meh shooter and it was huge and bulky for the capacity it offered. |

I carried a .40 Sig Stainless Elite P229 on duty for about 6 years. Before that we were issued an HK USP .40. Before that we were issued that abomination known as the Beretta 96 Brigadier .40. Before that the .40 didn't exist. I've personally owned and shot various 9mm, .40, .45, .357, 10mm, .41 magnum, .44 magnum, .45 Winchester Magnum, and .50 AE as far as pistol calibers. The only reason I had .40 was because we were forced to carry them by our agency. As soon as I retired, I retired and just recently sold that .40 Sig P229. I carry one of several 10mm 1911 pistols as my EDC handguns. The 10mm is flatter shooting than .45 ACP, has less recoil than a .44 magnum, but, has more power (over 600 ft. lbs of energy and similar ballistics to a .41 magnum) than 9mm, .40, and .45 ACP. I ended up getting rid of my .45 ACP and my .40 calibers pistols. The only reason I kept my 9mm pistols is because I like the particular pistols and their inherent accuracy (HK P7 M13/M8 and CZ 75B) and their ergonomics.
I don't know what your criteria are for choosing any caliber pistols. But, mine are mainly for self defense in an EDC pistol that is concealable, easy to carry, and effective. The 10mm meets my criteria. It easily beats the .45 ACP and the .40 S&W for that purpose. To each his own. |

.40 S&W is a great cartridge and right now .40 guns are a steal. Get a USP .40 fullsize or a G35.

I like Glocks in 9mm. In ..40 they feel like shit. OP, go try one before you buy one in any make just to be sure... |

Sig 229 has been the most accurate .40 caliber pistol I have ever shot.

I love my p229 in .40. I shoot it better than my p226 9mm
Lots of good options. I would go with whatever platform you like best |

I have two M&Ps in .40 and love them, I can shoot them as well as I can most 9mms. I've had a 229 in .40 as well and liked it, it was a good gun for sure. The M&Ps ended up winning out though, with an apex trigger they are hard to beat in my book. Bud's usually has police trade ins or used for sub $350 too, great deal in my opinion.

My favorite all around size is the G23 but in a close second is the G22, but I'm a Glock guy too.
I would also check out the Sig P320, seems like a lot of people are liking it. |

It's unfortunate you don't like your USP because that's what I'd recommend in a 40. The USP was designed around the 40. I have one and it shoot the 40 very well. Next I'd recommmend a 226 or 229.

As the Toyota Camry of pistols it's not sexy, but the best value is probably a boring G23. Spice it up a bit and find a compensated G23C then get an unported Wolf threaded barrel and a suppressor. Now you can have a light-show when you want it or more reserved shooting when you don't, My gen3 G23C is by far my favorite pistol.

I'm a very high volume shooter and own quite a few really nice relatively expensive handguns and go to the range 2-3 times weekly.
I also own an early production example M&P .40 which I still hold in high regard. It's a solid, reliable, reasonably accurate, and very soft shooting .40 service pistol; and it's one of the handguns in my nightstand as I wait for Hurricane Mathew to arrive in my area. It's a very good .40 caliber service pistol, and 16 rounds of 180 grain HST in the gun is what I want to have in my hand tonight in the event I need to use a handgun. Naturally an AR will be the first gun I pick up. |

I dont like glocks, sigs dont do anything for me, beretta had soft recoil but I didnt like the trigger.
Steyr M-A1 came to mind for some reason, I have never shot or even seen one, but I have heard people like them. CZ, Baby eagle, or any other gun you enjoy shooting in 9mm or .45. I need to say though, my first gun was an XD40 4" and has never done me wrong. maybe look into the XD/XDM line? |
