DC has an unfortunate carry rule. Only can hold 20 rounds max (double the 10 round limit).
This means you can do 10+1 in a pistol, but spare mag can only hold 9 rounds. Or two pistols with 10 rounds each, etc.... you get the idea. There is a 10 round mag limit so 11 rounds is the most you can squeeze in if one is chambered.

KAHR CM9 fill the pocket carry roll. This is on body about 99% of the time.

Valuable are transported for work (no not related to armored vehicles) and usually accompany me in my backpack. Im not worried about off body carry as I almost have this pack handcuffed. No not that seriously but its not a "purse" that just gets thrown around. It NEVER leaves contact with my body in public. Dont need speeches about the risk of off body carry. Im fully aware.

Keep in mind there is a smaller 9mm on body with 7 rounds. Im looking for a "backup" weapon / "heavy hitter."  A SHTF weapon in a urban sense of the word.

Goals:
**Pack as much damage into 11 rounds in the most convenient and accurate package** This would be for an urban environment so missing is almost out of the question

Some considerations: G17/21 MOS w. reflex (i had one on a g19 and was EXTREMELY accurate and fast with it). G21, G20 (10mm), M&P 45 or 45C, XDS, etc....

I would personally say a .45acp for your goals. Or maybe something like the Coonan 357mag. They do have a compact version as well.

Mares leg in .454 or 45-70

I would go with a 10mm or a .45ACP. 1911 or Glock.

While the capacity is a bit under your limit one of the eight shot 357 magnum snubs from S&W would fit- if you know how to use one they are exceedingly accurate and well 357 mag is still the combat effectiveness king of the hill. In autos ( as you can tell I am a wheel gun guy) if concealed a glock 29 or 30 or if you are off body carry a 1911 with 10 round mag.

Congratulations on legally carrying in DC.  Glock 19/26 of course, and better yet get 2 & have 40 rounds on tap bwtn the two guns.

glock 19 or 26, beretta m9a1 compact, insert any 9mm compact.

Why go to a bigger caliber when the effect on attackers with any service caliber handgun is about the same? With the 9mm you get less recoil and faster follow up shots.

Sure there is wasted space with 10 rd mags but I can still shoot them faster while keeping the rounds on target.

Something in .45, probably a Glock 21.

M&P 45, Glock 21, or Sig P227.  If you're limited to 10 rounds, you might as well make the most of them.  I prefer the M&P, especially with a 10 round limit, because the find the smaller grip much easier to manage.

XD-40 Sub Compact.  9+1 in the gun and a 9rd spare magazine.  Only short of the limit by one round.  Nice carry gun.

Birdman Nuke50.  You should really just need one unless it's a dud.

Hahaha! That's what I was thinking... have a pistol, a reload, and a back-up, and a reload for that...

Of your choices OP I'm liking the M&P45... S&W really hit a home run with this series of pistols as they are so soft shooting and are very ergonomic and reliable. I'm a big fan of CZ too so a 97B series with a solid belt/holster combo would be on my short list as well if I were you...

it7eke2000 I'm interested in the story behind getting a DC carry permit. Today's update from the VCDL mentions that only 62 have been issued because they require a "good reason" to issue a permit.

1911 in 10mm gives you one more round in the mag compared to the .45 acp.   Seems to meet the OP's criterion.

One of the older Dan Wesson CBOB Commanders in 10mm maybe.

I would go Glock 30s, 10+1 rounds of .45 and a backup mag should do the trick.

Does that mean you can't buy ammo while packing a pistol?

My first thought with the capacity restriction is a .45
But as others have said,  why do that when you're not gaining a lot and 9mm has more manageable recoil?
Ive got a 1911 that i trust to do pretty much anything anywhere.  And that's 8+1. Ive got an m&p45 midsize that holds 10 and i shoot it really well.

However shooting 45 costs almost twice as much,  it's dirtier,  and there's no doubt i can shoot my glock 17 quicker.

Im going to suggest something like a glock 19 with 10rd mags.

Because those can just be found everywhere, and the ammo is cheap and plentiful.

I was looking for a carry gun a bit after the 2004 restrictions hit........ Didn't have the cash to buy any full capacity mags, which were fetching a pretty serious amount.

Went with a GLOCK 23. With 11 rounds of .40 in the pistol, with a spare 10 rounder on my belt, I didn't feel undergunned at all. Would do it again if it becomes necessary.

I would go with either an M&P 9 compact or a M&P 45 compact, the 45c shoots lazzzer beams. My dad has been carrying his more and more lately because he shoots its much better than any of his other pistols.

Any 9mm Commander can be converted, easily. Buy ammo in bulk or load your own.
Sometimes you have to make the extra effort. Let this be one of those times.
