I'm just curious to find out how many folks that carry 9mm opt for the higher pressure ammunition and maybe why they made that choice.

Ranger 124 grain +P. I'd probably still carry COR-BON +P+++ if it was available off the shelf around here
I have Ranger +P+ in my glove box/console mags, but carry normal 147 Ranger in my carry mags.
Just because really. |
124gr HST, just enough velocity out of a 3.25" barrel (Bersa BP9) w/o being +p
124 gr +P Gold Dots in my G26, sometimes 147gr +P HSTs.
I'm fine with standard pressure too, but at the time the +Ps were available. So I bought those. |
Standard pressure Critical Duties just because my G19 doesn't handle quite as well as my M&P did with the +P rounds.

Shield
Usually 124grGold Dots Standard Pressure Sometimes 124gr HST Standard Pressure 124gr Freedom Munitions Loaded XTP Standard Pressure Why? Quicker follow up shots and better accuracy. |
135gr Critical Duty or 147gr HST, std pressure for faster followup shots.

124 gr standard pressure Gold Dots.
Why? Because I got a case of them cheap. |
If it is on the recommended list it really doesn't matter to me if it is +P or not.
Currently standard pressure 147hr HST.
The +P version wasn't out yet when I bought my stash. I'll be rotating to 147gr Ranger's when the time comes as I was able to procure some of that. |
124gr HST. Because they price was right and that is what local LE carries.
I carry +p+ rangers in my shield. The reason i do this, is supposedly, the 357magnum 125 gr hp, is the be all, end all ,one shot stop king.I figure the closer i can get to that kind of velocity the better.I do not notice any harsher recoil with this load. Some day, i want to run all of the current 9mm sd offering through my chrono, to know how they act in such a small barrel.Till then, the faster the better.

115 +P Hornady Critical Defense, because it shoots well in my Kahr K9 and I've killed hogs with it.
124gr HST's standard pressure. They work well and give a very nice spread. If I need to use +p or +p+, then I'll just step up to .40
The HST 124's are noticeably warmer than standard federal 115gr FMJ coming out of my shield |
When I carried 124 grain Gold Dot ammo, I used the +P variety. I switched to the 147 grain Gold Dot and it's standard pressure. I don't really know why I switched.
Federal 124 gr HST
Accurate, minimal recoil and readily available. |
124 +p Gold Dot
These days I carry a .45 most of the time but all of my 9mm handguns are loaded with the Gold Dots due to it's proven track record. I would carry the 147 grain Ranger ammo standard or +p if I were to have to switch. |

Standard pressure 147 HSTs for me, because 1980, and it's theories about projectile performance, was 35 years ago.
124 Gold Dot +P just a little extra velocity from the short barrel.
Standard. I'll take faster follow up shots over negligible per shot performance increases.
I carry .40, but I do choose 124 +p Gold Dot for 9mm if I had to carry that. I have a bunch of it.
Standard pressure. It meets the penetration standards which I value most. If I ran into +p at a good price I would switch to it just because extra power couldn't hurt.
Well, yes, it could.
In some loadings the "extra power" which translates to higher velocity will cause more rapid expansion and in turn, lower penetration. There is no free lunch when it comes to terminal ballistics. |
Standard for me with 147's. We have huge temp differences (-20 in the winter and 100 in the summer) and I don't want something that's already on the ragged edge of pressure to be pushed over the edge if the outside conditions are too extreme. Small chances, I know, but a popped primer could kill you if someone is shooting back.

currently 124grn HST
also will use 124 GD if HST isn't available |
Personally, I think bullet weight is an important part of this question. When I carry a 9mm I choose 124 gr. Generally speaking with premium loads such as HST or Gold Dot it works fairly well in either standard or +P. I think 115's really suffer from reduced penetration when you push their velocity to the max. Never been a fan of the 147 gr but I'll admit there are some good choices available.
Standard pressure 147gn GD'S right now, but will be trying out some 147 +P HST'S for comparison. 147's because I like heavy bullets.
Standard pressure.
The "Plus P " nets zero advantage, and the +P fad needs to go away. |
147 grain standard pressure.
ETA: BlitzPig covered my reasons why. |
Standard pressure
Less recoil Less flash Faster follow up Less wear +P does not necessarily mean better performance |
I carry golden sabers 124gr in either variety whatever I can get that's in stock.
Mainly because I rotate between 3 carry guns and golden sabers have proven to be the most reliable in all 3 so its easier for me to keep 1 type of defensive ammo than 3 different types. |
Wife carries 147 grain Fed HST's in her P225.
I've read anecdotal reports of the 225 not always feeding reliably when shooting +p loads so I went with something I knew would work for her. So far, they have proven to function reliably in the gun. I carry either a P229 in 40 or a G23 because the Department issued me the P229 and provides 165Gr Speer Gold Dot's. I have no issues trusting my life to 9mm however. |
124 gr. JHP, standard pressure.
Why? 1) Browning Hi Powers don't hold up well under a steady of +P or +P+. 2) Slight terminal ballistics advantage of higher pressure ammo is negated by increased effect on the shooter, i.e. muzzle rise, recoil, etc... |
At what velocity do 124 grainers go from being standard to +P?
+P because I normally carry a .40 and it replicates the recoil better.
Well, actually it's because I wanted 124 gr. Gold Dots and the ones they had were +P. But I do tend to string downward during rapid fire with standard 9mm loads. |
