These two are the best mentioned so far. A close third would be a CZ SP-01 Tactical. The worst .40's I've owned/shot is the Glock 27... What a POS that was/is...

I had a Gen 4 27 that I liked a lot, but I couldn't control it well with 2 fingers and using an extension didn't make much sense to me. Great gun, though.

My FN FNX40 is a pretty soft shooter for a .40. The best .40 I have shot to date next to the USP40. I did not like the G23, G27 or the Kahr K40. The G22 was just okay.

I would agree, as much as I dislike the .40, if I had to have one it would be one of the two above.

Head to the LGS that rents the guns out and shoot ALL of them.

Buy which ever one feels and shoots better for you.

Personally I like the G22.

In my experience, both the M&P and SIG P229 handle the .40 S&W very well.

The Glock 23 is the most unpleasant pistol to shoot, period.  Not to mention, the Glock 22 isn't too far behind the Glock 23.

The original XD-40 suffers from simply being a 40S&W barrel jammed in a 9mm frame (breach face and feed lips are the only other real changes).  The magazines thus are the same width as the 9mm magazine so they are not true double stacks.  Where most full size 40S&W handguns get 15-16rds in a flush magazine the XD-40 only gets 12rds.  Similar problem for the Beretta 96.

Have you ever shot a 310gr 44magnum with 21.5grs. of H-110 magnum powder ?

Have you even shot a J-frame .357 mag ?

I'm no Glock Kool-aide drinker, but the G23 is a pussycat compared to hot magnum handloads.

yep, that's a 45ACP brass case for size comparison

My favorite .40's are the ones that have 9mm conversions...

I keed, I keed....

I had a fullsize M&P .40 that shot well and had less pop than some others I've tried.  I really liked it.  Might still have it if the trigger didn't feel like a gravel road.

I have nearly 40k on my XD-40 Tactical but it's still a short coming compared to handguns that are made for 40S&W from the ground up.

In my vast experience of 40cal handguns that I've owned, that includes only the 40cal sti marauder, I'd say they are:

The sti marauder and the sti marauder.

I've shot plenty of 40s in my life and hated them all. Major pf, 20 round mags, and a really slick platform (2011) make it a lot easier To like that cartridge. For a comp or fighting gun it's fine. For carry, I'm still looking for something better than my g19.

You won't find it.

I do own two .40 calibers: an HK P30 and a Glock 27.  Both have been flawless and surpassed expectations.  I still won't depart from my Gen2 G19.

The accuracy was great with my G27, the part that sucked about it was I, nor anyone else that shot that little piece of shit could get (2) magazines thru it without a stove pipe, failure to battery, a slide locked with rounds in the magazine, or a combination of all three... This was with stock (9) round Glock mags, G23 mags, etc, etc...I tried to like it for (5) years. Finally I drove it over to Glock, had the armorer go thru it; and sold it the week after disclosing it fully to the buyer, for $300. I replaced it with 2an M&P 40 compact. It was the best move I've ever made within the .40 caliber. It's never jammed, is just as accurate, and recoils like a 9mmNato round out of a full sized metal 9mm. It's very soft shooting with 180 grain ammo, ball or hollow points and it holds another round in the magazine. I like Glocks in .45 and 10mm, but fuck their .40 caliber offerings...

I've read on many different sites that the M&P 40 is not rated for +P ammunition.  Dont know if that matters to you, OP. You may want to check in to that.

There is no official standard of a .40 S&W +P other than the boutique manufacturers like Buffalo Bore.

Nope.... only Buffalo Bore does... there is no "standard" on what a +P load would be and for the most part the .40 S&W really can't be maxed out since it is already running pretty high.

Ive only owned and shot a few .40's.

Sig P239: Accurate, good ergos, pleasant recoil.

G22 Gen3: hated the finger grooves.

G23 Gen 2: good ergos, bad muzzle flip (found my Glock 20 to be more controllable)

I would like to try the Gen4 Glock 22 and the full sized M&P40.

But if i were going to buy another .40 it would be a full sized handgun with a steel frame.
