7 yds is a common min. A lot has to do with the condition/design of the steel. With the plates slightly angled down, nearly all splash goes down. I have shot a lot of steel with 9mm frang at a lot less than 7 yds, and have yet to catch any splash back.

What DVCER said plus a smooth surface. A pitted surface increases the chance of splashback.

Angled down-ward is a very good idea (yea..that's not new). Out shooting this summer at steel target about 7-10 yards away. the 460 Rowland was really kicking those steel plates around. Got one in a position that was bouncing the splash of the bullet jacketing material right back at us. I noticed the stuff hitting my face and noticed shooting buddy was looking around wondering what was landing on him. Had to reposition targets.
Standard 9 and 45 should not have such a problem at 7 yards. Dimples tend to let spalling fly strait back at shooter. So always wear ear and eye protection. |

In cowboy action, we shoot them as close as 3 yds, but we shoot lead bullets only. I believe that the accepted safe minimum for jacketed bullets is 7 yards. This would be shooting clean (no dents) steel plate that is angled down.

On my range, I've always done 12 yards for pistol, 25 for rifle. I think an MGM rep recommended this to me years ago.

I've shot my AR500 steel targets as close as 5 yards without any issues with shrapnel. It isn't recommended, but...

10 yards is pretty standard, but I have shot them as close as 7. At 7 yards, I'd make sure the steel was flat, smooth, and had a generous angle.

Last speed games I played we had part of a stage 15 feet from steel.
We expected, and got some splashback. Sharp pieces of jacket, nothing that would draw blood. Eye protection is MANDATORY

I am a bit more cautious about this especially since I caught a piece of a ricochet in the face back in 2012. I still have a piece of it buried right under my skin in my cheek.
Wear eye protection all the time. |
