Uncle didn't take care of his Ruger .357.  Gave it to me to fix.  Te cylinder is frozen, it won't rotate.  The ejector rod will not budge either.  I can rotate the cylinder out, that's about it.

Suggestions?

I think what he did was store it under his bed, which is a thin layer of shitty carpet atop a concrete floor.  Moisture, and perhaps some other corrosive funk, worked its way into the gun.

Thanks for any help, guys.

Iive ammo or no?
If no, simply soak the whole thing in hoppies solvent then spank the ejector rod good, likely the empties (or fulls) are slightly corroded and thus they are stuck in place. Cylinder is likely the same issue. the hoppies ought to help.  Don't give him the gun back, he isn't nice to a nice gun. buy him a used stainless Taurus, tell him it is more corrosion resistant.

Good news is that she's fully unloaded.  Cylinders are empty.

That's just what I'm looking for, for a project. Want to sell it?

I had a security six that did this, except it was loaded. I very carefully disassembled it. A little nerve-wracking. Once the tension is off the hammer and the trigger housing dropped, it is possible remove the cylinder. Mine ended up being the ejector rod. It had worked loose. Once I adjusted it again, it has worked fine but I do make it a point to always check the length whenever I clean it.

Now would be a good time to upgrade to a Story steel ejector rod housing and maybe a nice birds head ejector rod.

OK I just got the crane and cylinder out.

Soaking in ATF now.  Damn, that stuff stinks.

The cylinder still does not rotate about the crane.

Hoping the ATF will penetrate into the bearing area and maybe free it up.

Put some acetone in the ATF.

I just cut the ATF down with 50% kerosene.  I'll let it soak this week and see what happens this weekend.

I would think ATF would destroy the finish, that stuff is EVIL. Kroil by comparison is nice.

ATF and acetone is a much better penetrant.

Yea but they don't mix...

The acetone just floats.

Think unshaken salad dressing.

WHAT??????

ATF will NOT destroy the finish on any firearm that is coated with a metal finish (plated, blued or raw steel).  It's a lightweight, highly detergent oil, nothing more.

In fact, ATF is an EXCELLENT firearms lubricant, and is actually better than motor oil.

I don't know where people get the idea that various petrochemical lubricants can hurt normal metals.   Yes, there are solvents that contain things like ammonia and the like that can attack some platings, and many resin and polymer coatings cannot stand extended exposure to normal petrochemical lubricants.  But regular metals?   No harm is possible.

I don't think so.  Acetone is a petrochemical.  So is ATF.  They mix JUST FINE.

Don't believe me?  Google "Ed's Red".   Two if it's prime components are ATF and acetone.

I did a 50/50 ATF/kerosene mix.  It worked.

Gun stunk like ass when I was done, but it worked.

All one would need to do is pull it out of its holster and the attacker will die of the stench.
