Saw a similar thread over on TOS and it got me thinking.
As a mental exercise, design a handgun based on existing handgun feature sets and explain your feature set choices. I'm sure at this point not all the features could be compatible, but this is what I'd see as the ultimate fighting handgun: Frame- P320/P250 type grip shell built like an M&P to allow for a removable serialized trigger pack and allows for a manual 1911/M&P type thumb safety or not. Removable backstraps. The removable frames could easily be built to allow for any style of mags to allow for mag compatibility or support ban states with old mags for other guns. Frame could be made from polymer, aluminum, or steel depending on the customer's needs and pocketbook. Trigger- Striker fired single action, basically an APEX FSS aluminum type trigger. The APEX kit is a legitimately good trigger, not just a compromise and I'd love to see that type of trigger on an off the shelf gun. The P320 and VP9 are good, but the FSS is better. Slide- Tool-less takedown same as the P320, which uses a single detent to remove the striker plate, extractor, and striker assembly. Internally lightened and tuned springs. Sighting- Glock or 1911 sight dovetails (for sight availability). ATOM type optic mounting over the whole rear allowing for a standard sight on a plate, or remove the plate and have the sight mounted in front or behind the optic of your choice. Barrel- Beretta 92 locking style barrel. Easy to suppress and a low bore axis. I've got some thoughts on a way to modernize the slide but I'm not sure how viable they'd be. With the advantage of a milled lightened slide comes the disadvantage of having your internals exposed. I'm wondering if having a plastic insert to fill those openings would lighten the slide enough. I've seen a plastic insert for the opening on the G34, and I think a 3-sided plastic insert to fill the lightening cuts would work. That insert could also be stippled or textured for cocking serrations without needing milling done. Thoughts? |

Frame: Springfield XDm. complete with grip safety and manual safety.
Trigger: Springfield XDm Slide/barrel: Beretta PX locking style. Accurate and low bore axis.5.25" long. Sites: Tritium Caliber: 460 Rowland |
|
frame:polymer CZ75 clone
slide: BHP profile sights: fiber optic or trijicon striker is fine with me barrel length sub 4" with polygonal rifling 15+rd capacity in 9mm NO MANUAL SAFETY available in black or several cerakote colors for the same $$$ |
|
Frame: VP9 It's perfect for me, no safety and the slide stop/release is in the perfect position and I find the trigger guard big enough for gloved hands and the paddle mag release as superior to the push button.
Trigger:VP9 or the M&P Apex aluminum AEK, both are the best and should be the only options for striker semi's. Slide: VP9 slide but with a longer 5" barrel, keep the wings on the end as they make sling shot even more easier. Make it optics ready and so being modular to the shooter. Sights: Trijicon HD night sight set in orange front and green in back. Barrel: 5" polygonal barreling. |

STI already did... Tactical 4.0, iv shot one but dont own one yet...

Browning Hi Power with no mag disconnect, decent sights and beveled magwell for easier reloads.

Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range...
Sorry, it had to be said... I would like the grip frame of the VP9, with the lockwork of a Walther P99 AS, with a 5 inch polygonal rifled barrel, with large standard type sights with tritium inserts. And yes I want a paddle type mag release. And I want one each in 9mm and 45 ACP. |

SIG X-Five; either the original P226 X-5 or one of the newly redesigned X-Five models and call it a day.
High capacity, fine fitting and craftsmanship, excellent triggers, smooth as silk actions, terrific balance, extraordinarilly soft shooting, reliable and all with superb accuracy. I like their appearance as well. I own an example of both, and for me, they represent the ideal handgun.....I'd change nothing. |

10mm, 15 round USP Tactical w/ LEM trigger, grip lengthened slightly to accomodate the big mag.

Give you guys the world to design something new and I get "I like Glocks, they're good enough".
You guys have no imagination. No wonder you can't get people to admit their 1911s could possibly be obsolete. |

Bite your tongue; I just walked in the door with one of the brand new model SIG 1911 1911-45-B-STGT Supermatch Nitrons less than an hour ago. A lot of guns we have now are improved versions of older models. I love my CZ75, but wanted a rail and for it to be a little lighter. The P01 is lighter and has a rail. I don't like manual safeties the P01 is decocker. I wish it had a better trigger, Cajun gun works deals with that. Outside of that it is already my dream pistol developed over almost 40 years into something perfect. |

I just want an M&P the size of a G19. I'd also like the safety plunger to not be accessible from the top of the slide and I would be nice to have top and side serrations from the factory.

Since I read the thread title I've been running a handgun design bureau in my head.
For a few years I had an XD45 Service. I tried to use it as a main carry gun to replace my LW Commander. That experiment failed. The XD was too clunky and hard to carry in spite of it weighing just two ounces more than the Commander. The whole time I had the XD I wished Springfield would take the 4" XD slide and streamline it a bit. Then make an eight shot single stack XD tupperware lower for it. Just for kicks make it take 1911 magazines. Not the over-engineered XDM/XDS nonsense. A simple single-stack XD45 Service. Maybe someone from SA is lurking..........but I doubt it. |

Every pistol feels like a compromise to me. I find this very unfortunate.
What I really NEED though that is severely missing from my EDC is a good single stack 9mm. The Shield feels awkward in my hand, and the Walther PPS pinches my palm horribly during magazine changes. Also I've taken to carrying AIWB. I'm not entirely comfortable carrying a striker fired pistol AIWB... I've tried to compensate by switching to H&Ks with the LEM trigger system, however this leaves much to be desired in my shooting abilities What I would like though, Single stack 9mm with a paddle style magazine release, a grip length slightly shorter than a Glock 19. Some type of H&K LEM / Striker fired hybrid ? And some type of device on the back of the pistol to make the trigger inoperable when pressed (For riding during reholstering) A second pistol the same size as a Glock 19, with similar design characteristics as the aforementioned theoretical pistol that can readily be mounted with an RMR would satisfy all of my EDC needs entirely |

BHP that holds 18 rounds. No magazine disconnect. No firing pin safety. Flat bottom firing pin stop. No lightening cuts on slide. Slightly thicker front strap. 20 lpi checkering front, and rear straps. Ring hammer. Slight beavertail. 4# trigger with a SIG or Beretta like reset. Three lugs on the barrel instead of two. A more 1911-ish thumb safety. Non ambi. Black G10 grips, double diamond pattern. Rail. Steel frame. Flattened and serrated top of slide. Warren sights. French boarders, and ball cuts like a 1911 slide. User serviceable bushing. 4.25'' barrel/slide. Lanyard loop. The trigger assembly wouldn't go into the slide, and come back into the frame. It'd be laid out more like a CZ-75. 9mm.
All parts would be forged carbon steel with a Black T finish. |

Dream pistol-
92g "brigadier" stainless slide but shrunk down to compact length. Brunitone finish Stainless barrel threaded brunitone Fiber optic sights front dovetail sight. Compact frame with rail and rounded trigger guard - brunitone finish 13rd mags but with the m9 sand resistant coating Elite 2 hammer and d spring Stainless steel trigger polished Lo profile decocking lever Enlarged mag release Vz grips in tan |

1911 slide profile but slightly lower. 9mm with 4.0" barrel. Free recoil system for increased reliability with a wider range of ammo. Aluminum lithium frame, magazine well area minimized on all four sides as high as possible, I don't need the entire frame to be modular, just the grip will do nicely. Takes Sig 228/226 mags. Striker fired, modify the Glock trigger with a double sided trigger bar and aluminum trigger for increased stiffness and smoother trigger pull.

Beretta 92fs with a slightly smaller grip and lower bore axis.

The gun of my dreams already exists...it just shouldnt cost as much as it does!
Frame - CZ 75 Tactical Sport: I want the full length dust cover without the rail of a SP-01 (rail model optional). No grip safety. Double stack. All metal. Trigger - SAO: I dont mind the SP-01 in single action, but I know it could be better if tuned. Trigger safety only (no grip, thumb, slide, etc.) Slide - I want something with FCS and RCS, I want the real estate provided by a 1911 slide (not like the CZ slides). External extractor. No LCI pin or lever (the hole like the M&P is fine by me). Tri top with the serrations similar to how the CZ slides are on top (that runway you look down and its plain as day if youre aiming correctly). Sights - 1911 style: Versatile, BOMAR adjustable optional. Id want a fiber front and a fixed serrated rear. Barrel - Needs to be at least 5" long. Fully supported chamber. Threaded optional. Dont want a bushing...more like a fluted bull barrel. Clearly a pinned grip safety STI/SVI 2011 would fill this niche pretty well for me. I dont see the need to have those mechanisms even in the gun if Im just going to pin the grip safety anyway. Stuff that can break when I wouldnt want/need it to. Id rather pay closer to $500-$750 for a gun like this (not $2000-$4000). CZ pumps out guns that are pretty close to my desires for $475-$1100...should be able to mass produce and get the price down. Would be a great full size gun for duty, range, and competition. A compact and compact single stack version could make some good forays into CCW. |

Glock, 2nd gen style grip with no finger grooves. Trijicon HD sights. If I sent my G19 for finger hump removal I would be set.

I've got two, one revolver and one semi-auto.
The revolver would be a cross between the Chiappa Rhino, and the Nagant revolver. It would fire from the 6 o'clock chamber to reduce recoil, and the cylinder would move forward, to prevent gasses from escaping, thereby increasing the velocity. It would have to take a new cartridge, based on the .357 but uncircumcised, so it would be able to "plug in" to the barrel. As for the semi-auto, I would like a double-stack in 7.62x25 Tokarev cartridge. It would be striker-fired, and have the "quick sights" that the Caracal had, before they were all recalled. |

Titanium frame double stack 1911 commander size frame
Damascus slide. 45acp. |

I'd like to see something like a polymer Makarov, but striker fired. I mean really... I was astounded at how simple the internals are in my first Mak.

striker fired cz75 with light rail and trijicon night sights.
no safety |

Frame: M&P small grip frame (I like to get my hand around that sucker good)
Barrel: 5.5" Calibre: Entirely too complicated, but a modernized version of the 7.62x42mm SP4 used in the PSS silent pistol in the same dimensions as a 10mm auto. Allows for almost entirely silent firing. 255 gr projectile at 1020fps. Magazine: M&P but for 10mm auto. 17 round magazine (slightly longer than flush) Trigger: Tuned 1911 trigger with an XDm width blade safety Sights: Green tritium rear sights and orange front. Low setting mount for a Trijicon RMR 3.5 MOA battery model with a 1/3 co-witness Misc: VP9-esque wings on the slide. PPQ slide release Inforce APL To pull from the movie Inception, "Musn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling." |
