Owned By:
Grant, Charles E. — Sergt. — Res. Boston; 20; occu. — ; enl. Sept. 22, 1861; must. Oct. 10,

1861 ; disch. May 25, 1863, for promotion. See Co. "B" 55th Mass. Inf.

Source:http://archive.org/stream/massachusettssol21931mass/massachusettssol21931mass_djvu.txt

NOTE:

The 55th Mass Infantry was a colored outfit.
ETA: Charles E. Grant started with the 55th as a 2nd Lieutenant and his final rank was Captain.  He was in Company B.
He appeared to make Brevet Major as his final top rank.
There is a Charles E. Grant born 1841 who was listed in the 1860 and 1870 census.  It is most likely the Charles E. in question as it lists his residence as 10th Ward in City of Boston.

There are two Charles E. Grants listed in death records for Massachusetts.  One died in 1886 in Lowell, MA and the other died in Chester, MA in 1888.  This, of course, assumes he stayed in Mass.

ETA:
The Pond revolvers violated the Rollin White patent for bored through cylinders held by S&W.  S&W won the suit and the remaining inventory of Pond revolvers were marked "Made for Smith & Wesson".

Yours appears to be before that date, which makes sense as I think the case wasn't settled until after the war.

I tried for years and countless hours trying to get some info on this pistol. My grandfather left it to me after he died some 30 years ago. Thanks for the info. This place never lets me down on the stuff people know and can find.

While I could be wrong it looks like the cylinder is in backwards the locking notches  typically in the back rather than front on most wheel guns

Cylinder is in correctly in the OP's picture

Nope that's the way it goes in. It rotates and locks up perfect.  I will take a picture of it opened up and you can see the cylinder lock in the front of the frame

That is really cool.  I've never seen one before.  Is it rimfire or centerfire?  What caliber.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

That's frakking cool. How did your grandfather come across it?

I have no idea how it got in his possession. I do know that he was very into collecting old guns. He had a complete winchester lever action collection,That he sold to take care of medical bills. I remember one room in his house that had floor to ceiling gun racks on every wall and back to back racks on the floor in a about a 20' by 20 ' room. He collected just about anything gun related. I sure miss him. Every time I go to a gun show I kind of feel him with me.

Dear Sir Thing,
I am the GG Grandson  of Capt. Charles E Grant.
I have spent my whole researching and keeping  his life's work.
I would be most humbly appreciative if we could make some kind of arrangement for your piece.
I have a Winchester 1895 model, made in I think 1906, at the shop getting cleaned.
Barrel is in excellent condition. Needs a buttstock. I would be willing to trade,
or make any kind of reasonable arrangement .
Most Humbly ...
If I can figure it out I will post a pic of CE Grant around the time he bought the gun.

Thank you for the further info on the old civil war gun. I and my family have had it for many years and had intended for it to be past down from one to another. I have no need for the 1865 you mentioned. Let me talk to the rest of the family and get some advice in the way to precede with your request. It may take a couple of days to talked to all involved. Thanks for your help in the info provided.

In 1925 Charles lost his wife in a terrible accident.
His son Barton had been home since WW1 ended.
Barton was "Shelll shocked" from the war and developed
a drinking and gambling problem.  By the time
Charles E past in 1927, Barton was taking things out of the home
and selling them. I could imagine this piece sitting on a store shelf
and your Grandfather  picking it up. The death of Charles and Luella has had
a long and lasting feeling of loss..

Sold 62 years after the Civil war ended and 2 years after the owner died. Sounds like a pretty legit sale back in the day.

Yea. Definitely not a scam! How I even came across this site and the gun was purely
coincidental. Tell me how to post pics. And I'll prove everything I say.

I would like to mention that I am a member of
The Sons Of Union Veterans of the Civil War
Willie Grout camp 25, also a participant in the
15th MA reenactment regt. , The New England Gaurd, and The
Blackstone Guards. Living history is my focus, and to be able to
purchase the pistol would greatly enhance the collection for educational
purposes. For all you naysayers...grow up!! Don't believe? Do some research!!
