She just got her CHL.  She's 65.  Some arthritis in her hands.  She can't pull the slide on my LCP, so I'm thinking something like a revolver, no external hammer.  Something easy to use.  She can pull the trigger on one of those.  She said she wants to spend 300 bucks.  Light enough to carry in a purse.

Any recommendations?  I figure 300 bucks might not get something new.  I could look on gunbroker.

$300 is a tough spot in the market.  Even used Smiths have crept beyond that price point.  Only thing new in that range would be Taurus, which can be a decent pistol.  I say can because they can be erratic.  Personally I have had good luck with them but not everyone has.  Maybe a Charter, but again they can be hit or miss.  Ruger LCR will be in the $400 range.  The grips on those make them reasonably pleasant to shoot.  A Smith K frame would be ideal but again the price point won't work.  A three inch Model 10/13/64/65 was about the perfect carry revolver.  Good luck finding one at any price.

Don't rule out an auto just yet.  Pulling the slide is more a question of technique rather than grip strength.  The secret hold the slide firmly in one hand and push the frame with the other, the exact opposite of what most shooters due.

Big +1 to that.

To the OP:
Also small guns have a stiff recoil spring by necessity. My vote would be for a larger frame (Glock 19 and bigger) handgun.  It will be much easier to shoot and much easier to manipulate the slide on. DAO revolvers, especially small ones are pretty tough to shoot well (that is just my opinion), so assuming she is a novice shooter, I might would go a different route.

Your price range makes things a bit tough, but I agree with the above post about what to look for if you are planning on going the revolver route.

Edit: No personal experience with one, but Bersa automatics may fit the bill.

My 71yo mother has a S&W 49 in 38. Used for $350.

I sent her some pictures of the S&W body guard and the Ruger LCR.  She wanted pictures.... LOL.   But I see what you are saying about how to manipulate the slide on an automatic.  I'll bring a few pistols home for her to try to see if I can teach her to do it that way.  Really, she's not a shooter.  She did the course with dad and wants something for her purse.    I'm sure glad more women are getting involved.  Thanks for the info.   I know 300 is low low.  I might be able to help her out if there's something
more.

I'll try to get her to go to a gun show and try on a few.  Never thought about a glock.

try a S&W 642 airweight around 350 bucks.

9x19mm 1911 - lowest recoil of a major caliber in a full size frame, with a slightly lighter mainspring on the slide for her to work against.  She needs to use a coke bottle grip on the slide - women have different musculature, and what works for guys does not necessarily work for women.

I just cringe at the whole "purse carry" thing. You do know they chances of mom seeing the attacker coming with enough time to draw from her purse without being impeded by what ever else is In her purse and her arthritis is incredibly low right? She most likely wouldn't see the attacker coming and the first thing they will do is try to separate her from her purse because it has her money and possibly a weapon.if people cannot carry on their person they should really consider not carrying.

True.  But one in her purse is better than one not in her purse.  She isn't going to wear it in a waist band.  Think women here.  They aren't like us

I don't always carry on my person.  I wear scrubs.  Normally it's in my carry bag to the office.   Being a married man with children, I'm rarely in a position outside the home where I need it on my person.  But when in those situations, i do carry.   But all this is besides the point of my post and off topic. People have opinions like they have assholes.   Everyone has one.

So young, athletic men are the only people that can learn to have situational awareness and who should carry a weapon to defend themselves?  As long as she trains enough to be safe with it, she will be better off than if she didn't have it. You may disagree with it, but thankfully she has the right to make that choice for herself.

The same people that are not your typical looking "shooter" are the same ones that are the most likely targets for criminals. That 6' young man walking through the parking lot probably isn't going to get robbed regardless if he has a Glock 19 on his waste or not, because he looks like a tough mark. The 65 year old lady that weighs 100lbs soaking wet on the other hand...

She has gone to the trouble of getting her CHL, she wants to carry. She deserves to be able to do so. A lot of women start out carrying in their purse and eventually make the transition to on body carry. Everyone starts somewhere.

Its always best to start at the best position and not build the bad habbit from the start. But too each is own.

So let's see how you conceal a pistol under your dress.  Go on - I'm sure you look great, other than the hairy legs.

Deleted my original recommendation after more careful reading. Probably a 38 special revolver?

So you ever hear of the "flash-BANG" holster?     And no... not for the diversionary devices.

It is a clam shell type holster that has a loop attachment to your bra.

Might or might not work for Mom. but when your in scrubs you might not have to leave you weapon in a bag.... just don't get too close to that MRI machine.

On weapon choice my recommendation would be to go to a indoor range (or outdoor if there is one) that rents pistols and try a few different ones. One on your list should be that Ruger (I forgot the model) plastic frame revolver with the light weight cylinder (and laser... sharks not included).

While carrying in a purse isn't ideal saying "if people cannot carry on their person they should really consider not carrying" is one of the most ridiculous things I've read on Arfcom and that's a lot of ridiculous.  Wow. Arguing why that is ridiculous isn't even necessary.

No, no, we want pics of him in a dress concealing his EDC.  THAT would be ridiculous.

Hey look, if you wanna give mom a sense of false security with a gun in a bag I can almost guarantee she wont be able to access and arm yet another criminal with another stolen gun go right ahead.  Youll remember this conversation then. Enjoy your chosen revolver, I heard the rugers have the worst trigger. Go with the sw
