You must be shooting some pretty slow .45 ACP.  Mine makes it there in 1.6 seconds.

In vacuum maybe...

230 grain .45, 0.156 BC G1, muzzle velocity needed for 1.6 s flight time to 500 yards: 1450 fps
200 grain .45, 0.130 BC G1, muzzle velocity needed for 1.6 s flight time to 500 yards: 1630 fps

At 500 yards, a 230 grain .45 FMJ round will pass completely through a 55 gallon steel fuel drum.
