Do these things ever break in and and let you load more than 5 rounds into them?

This (bottom of the page) may be the problem.

I have 2 in the mail so I don't have first hand knowledge yet but supposedly you can make them pretty reliable by taking them apart, de-greasing them, inspecting for burrs, polishing the follower if needed and in some cases flipping the spring around if rounds dive in the magazine.

Load them up and let them sit for a while and then add more rounds and repeat.
I have also read about switching out the spring and using a wolf spring though I don't know which one.

This is what I did with mine. As I always do with new magazines, I took it apart, cleaned it, and inspected it closely. All 17 load in just fine.

Not to hijack, but can I tweak the follower legs to stop it from rattling when it's in the gun, or will something like a Mec-Gar follower work? It's not a problem with function, but I cannot stand the rattle.

Same- no experience with the newer mags.

Update did everything I said I would to the magazines and have fired them 2 full mags each, no issues.
Had them loaded now for a while and it's just hard to put the last round in now.

If you changed out the follower you would decrease the capacity. I notice that it will rattle every other round and also when a full magazine is inserted but not chambered. Try downgrading it one round?

Doesn't matter if it's 17 or 5: it still rattles. I only use it for the range as it stands now, but, if I could solve that problem, I would carry it.

If these are the KBI mags with the large plastic floorplate, then YES, they do loosen up. I picked up 5 of them about a year ago, two of them didn't want to load, but after several uses, they now load to 17 no problem.
