I'm thinking about a Rock Island Armory in 10mm. But I don't know much about the company. What does the hive think of this company products?

Don't own one yet from my research they make a quality 1911 and above quality for the price that they sell for. Now no where near a DW or other very top end 1911's yet same quality as Kimber for a lot less.

I can't comment on the 10mm but I've owned several 45's that were trouble free. They shot good and functioned just fine.

Don't expect the fit and finish to be anything more than a $500 pistol and you won't be disappointed.

ARMSCOR is the largest manufacturer of 1911s in the world, IIRC.  RIA is GTG.  Just remember, John Browning designed that action to feed FMJ.  Hollowpoints may require tuning.

I've owned one of their 45's, and still own one of their 9mm's, and the guns have basically been trouble free, with the exception of having to file down the right side grip to allow the extended ambi-safety to full disengage.

I was going to go with a 10mm in a Government Model platform, but ended up going with Glock instead.

RIA makes solid no nonsense 1911's and their customer service is excellent. Buy what you want from them. I expect you will be happy and if you are not then their cust service will take care of you.

I don't own one, but I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them if you see something you like. Like other's have said, you're not buying a premium 1911, but what you're getting for the money is excellent value.

I have seen in a couple of places (the high round count thread and one of the YouTube gun guys) discussion with the armorers at one of those Las Vegas gun ranges that put crazy numbers of rounds down range about how great RIA 1911s are. Yes, that's a bit anecdotal, but it's a pretty strong vote of confidence IMO.

RIA is a well made product at a good price in my opinion.

Yes GTG. They may not be the nicest finished, or most refined but they are more value for the dollar spent. Their stock 9mm is a ragged one holer for me at 10-15 yards.  Compare that to my Springfield and it is a joke.

They're good to go. I have their 10mm and it's a great value. Adj sight, G10 grips, mag well, supported-ramped barrel, and it's very reliable even with the truncated cone hollow points that the 10mm are loaded with.

They're legit. FWIW, STI takes their frames and slides and uses those as the base for their guns.

The ramped barrel is a plus in RIA 10mm.
My experience with the CS 45 acp has been overall great: only glitch was having to red loctitite the two piece FLGR. Also, some have had problems with the firing pin stop "walking out" under use, so I usually just throw in a new extra strength firing pin spring/fit a firing pin stop. Otherwise you have a lifetime warranty as long as you don't do any major work on the gun, ie sear work, frame mods, sight work. Do expect to detail clean them out thoroughly from preservative. Finally, RIA designs the firearms to run ball ammo, so take in consideration of break in time before running jhp.

I have the 10mm RIA 5" without the rail... put a higher strength Wolff recoil spring in with a EGW flat bottom firing pin stop and it's been flawless with my loads.
I load from 135gr JHP to 200gy JHP... the ramped barrel has eaten them all without issue.

Good to go.  Btw, they also make parts for other companies.  The STI Spartan is on a RIA 80% frame that they finish, last I heard.

I been looking at the RIA 1911 as well.  How do they handle most hollow points?

Mine did anything but truncated cone loads for some reason.

Hmm....Just saw this thread.  There's one locally I'm thinking about at $375 - the 10mm tactical model (used).  Was debating on getting it or a Glock 20 slide assembly to go on my Glock 41.  May have to go with the RIA and have 2 guns instead of a conversion..decisions, decisions...

For $375, I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.   Their 10mm guns are $6-750 new depending on features.  Save yourself a bunch of money by getting it used, and put it into upgrades, mags, and ammo.

yes they are very good quality,  i have heard they use colt 70 series machines or templates,  something ,  I have a  9mm and 45 with a rail.

really like them.  watch gun nuts media review on the 9mm 3500 rounds and he had no issues.  on YT.

Is the ramped barrel a new thing for RIA 10mms?
I just got in to 10mms earlier this year with a TNW ASR carbine and a Glock 40mos.
Used to own an RIA 9mm GI 1911 and a .45 TAC II. Both were great, no issues and worth more than what I paid for them.
I considered a 10mm RIA but I thought the Colt Delta Elites and RIA 10mms didn't come with ramped barrels which didn't give enough case support for hot 10mm loads like Underwood.

The list prices of RIAs have come up quite a bit over the past 5 years, I think a 10mm with the VZ grips & adjustable sights was around $650. Last year a LGS had a new RIA 10mm GI for $400, should have jumped on that. But the tiny GI sights drive me nuts, and are hard to upgrade.

Just Bought a RIA FS HC 10mm Yesterday. 17 rounds of 10mm

Was listed for $679.00, got it cash for $625.00

Packed full of cosmolene.

Cleaned it today, polished the feed ramp, can't wait to take it out.

Frame to slide fit is very tight, poor finish spot on left side of slide, only 1 magazine.

I'm not too worried about the finish, because it's gonna be a shooter. and more mags are on the way.

I don't plan on firing "any" FMJ, only my 10mm JHP home brew.

Couldn't pass it up for the price, and not many out there.

get slightly picky after 200 rounds.

Do they make a light weight Commander size?
Link Posted: 2/16/2018 10:54:42 PM EDT
[#27]
I have two, both in 45 acp.  a full size 1911 and a compact officers model.  Both operate at 100%.  With the right ammo.  The government model will shoot anything, never had any kind of stoppage.  the compact really likes hardball.  It will feed some hollow points but honestly I have not found a particular brand that works 100%.  That said I wouldn't expect a hollow point to open much from a 3 inch barrel, so I use hard ball.    As far as quality, no complaints here,  it shoots very well.  For comparison I also Have a colt light weight commander stainless also in 45 acp.  It shoots a little smaller groups but both brands are great.  I would not think twice about buying Rock Island.  a solid product.

Still working on a reliable ephalent load out of my tac 10mm.

Pushing 220 hard cast around 1300+ and she’s stout as an Irish crack whore.

I had a .45 tactical once. Didn’t care for the attachment method of the Ambi safety. Never had any trouble with it. Hollow points or ball.  Wasn’t as pretty to look at as some others.

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like?  My RIA Tactical (from ~2007 or so) ambi safety is essentially the same design as the Wilson Combat and other models.  Not a whole lot you can change with the design and all.  WC below, but it's the same thing really.

Same one I got at Christmas.
Just sent it in last week for warranty work. Wouldn't reliably feed FMJ.  Almost never made it through a full mag without a jam. Same issue 3 factory mags, and 3 different brands of factory ammo. Some fed better than others, but still way too many jams.
So far warranty dept. has been easy to work with. We'll see how things work when I get it back.
