I have one of the original Coonan .357mag auto loaders, a very fun pistol to shoot.

Has anyone here tried 1 of the new ones?

A guy at the range had one of the new ones.  He could not get it to cycle 38spl at all--even when changing out different recoil springs.  The guy knew nothing about guns, and kept sweeping everyone on the line.  he rents from the owner of the company and the guy gave him a "great deal" on it.

Someone called?  How you doing Cav?

MikeSH, Do you have a Model A or B?  Model As use the swinging link like a M1911 where as the Model B uses the cam lock up like a BHP.  I used to have two Model Bs.  Great shooting guns, that never malfunctioned.  Mine would feed empty .38 Spl cases but need a lighter recoil spring to get in to function with light .38s.  There was a different mag for .38 SPL as to place the rounds closer to the front of the mag.  Orginal mags were 7 rd affairs and later they came out with an 8rd mag.  I notice the new ones are back to a 7 round capacity.  My normal ISPC load was either a 125 gr JHP at 1500 fps or a 158 LSWC at 1300ish.  Most 1911 hoslters will work with the Coonan as long as it isn't form fitted tightly (longer dust cover).  I use to carry mine in the same Gordon Davis Liberty rig for a Beretta 92 (my 1911 fit also)  Mag pouches are a separate issue as they are longer in length.  Here is a 20 yr old pic of me firing one of mine.

Just shot one of the new ones yesterday, it was great. I was a little worried that it would not live up to the Coonan of old, but it was flawless. My buddy said his .38 special kit even runs 100%. I may have to pic one up soon.

What sort of accuracy are you seeing? I wouldn't mind a nice 50-100 yard gun.

I was shooting a steel dueling tree from 20 yards, all shots were hits. Did not shoot paper.

Great pistol.  Very accurate.  I hit the 75 yard plates with regularity using 125 grains.  I need to determine the drop for 158 grain, as that is all I have right now.

You need 38 +P ammo, not standard 38spl.

I just ordered the new compact to go with my Classic.

Back about 20 years ago I wanted one.
Could never justify the expense.
One of these years, or it'll be like the Smith Scofields, IMI Timberwolfs etc that I always wanted and never got one of before they went out of production.

The compact has arrived.

That is oil on the front of the slide near the frame.  I will be getting G10 grips and will hopefully find a good place to have the finish bead blasted.

I had forgotten about this thread, good to see all the recent post and people buying new pistols. I was out shooting mine a couple days ago.
