Most of the P64's on the market are from the late 60's early 70's and have very little wear/use and are in great shape. The internals of the slide are very much like the PPK, thats where the safety is so I would say they are just as safe as a PPK. The only thing unsafe would be if you had broken parts in the safety or hammer/sear mechanism, I would still thumb the hammer down while using the decock. I CCW'd my P64 for about a year and never had a problem with it, and have put hundreds of rounds through it and only hade 1 jam with some older cheap hollowpoints. It really does not carry much better than a full size Makarov PM, but it is a little slimmer.

The DA trigger pull with stock springs is very heavy and pretty much impossible to set off accidently, the SA trigger on the other hand is pretty light and makes accurate shooting with the little gun suprisingly easy. The sights are very small, but can be aligned precisly. Although I the P64 carries easily and I shoot it more accuratly in SA, I replaced it as my daily carry piece with a slightly bigger 9x19 Kahr. I just have more faith in the 9x19 round and ammo is more widely availible.

First, remember the P64 is not a locked breech design, its blowback,.Blowbacks depend on the weight/interia of the slide to seal (or "lock" the action). In order to use hotter ammunition, you'd probably need a locked breech design to keep the gun from battering itself to death in short order.

Most of the commercial loadings of 9x18 are already quite hot, I'd not push a blowback action further. Hornady loads an excellent defensive round in 9x18, with a 95 gr. JHP leaving the muzzle at 1000 fps. I've had good reliability from the various Russian rounds as well.

With the safety OFF it can fire when dropped, or so I'm told.
