I have an old-ish PX9609L (1911-A1 Loaded in OD Armory Kote) that I'm considering sending to Springfield's custom shop.  Looking at getting the "TRP package" done with an upgrade to 30lpi front strap checkering as well as adding the 2-piece magwell.  If I'm reading the price sheet correctly, should be $895 + $100 for the magwell + some differential for the enhanced checkering.  Anyone have any experience with their refurb work?  Any opinions for or against getting this done?  (worth it?)

Thanks in advance!

It seems like you could just buy a TRP for that price.

I agree that a few hundred dollars more will get a new TRP but I would still get this one re-done by someone anyway.  In other words, I'm not trying to choose between buying a new one and improving the old one.  I want to do something to revamp this old pistol, just trying to understand if going with the Springfield shop will produce good returns.

Aah gotcha.

I don't have any experience with the Springfield custom shop but I think the general consensus is that they do nice work.

I'm sure somebody will pop in with firsthand knowledge.

The Custom Shop does great work. A new TRP will be cheaper than the package + whatever your loaded cost, but it seems you are aware of that and want some work done anyways.
I almost went with the TRP package on my mil spec, but I hate their 20lpi cheesegrater checkering. They will not deviate from what is in the package.

I have had 3 pistol worked on by the custom shop.

Thanks bad, I'm thinking of doing something very similar just can't decide whether to use a milspec or the RO for the base gun.

Any advice since you have sent them both?

I will say that the RO is more accurate than my mil spec. Not by a huge margin, but still noticeable. This is offhand.

The only true negative on the RO is the target rear sight. I personally hate them (got the gun for a really good price) and the LPA cut has only 2 options, Harrison Design and the Heine.

The mil spec gives you a blank slate vs the RO. If you don't care for the rear sight options or other feature already on the RO, go mil spec.

Yeah I'm thinking a RO or Loaded (I currently have a loaded) would make a better base gun but as you have mentioned these choices will limit me on sights. Another negative  for the loaded is I don't want this project to have front serrations.

What I'm basically looking for would be a gun built to TRP specs without front serrations, 25 LPI checkering and Black T finish.

SACS is as good as it gets. Some are better but not many. My third gun just came back today from them. I am send a Baer out to them next week.

I sent my Compact model to them for some work(undercut front strap and install flat mainspring housing)and they went ahead and buffed out the idiot scratch I put in the slide at no charge.

They were fantastic.

SACS did a lot of work on on a Colt for me, as well as tuned an XDM.
I'm more than pleased with the work, communication was excellent, Deb and Amanda
were very helpful and Dave Williams was great.
Turn around time was quick and actually less than originally thought.
I hope to deal with SACS again!

What is the height of the dawson fo front sight?
Link Posted: 7/10/2015 8:30:34 AM EDT
[#15]
.180 I believe is the height. Id have to look at the paper work.

It's a nice sight for outside, but I hate it at my indoor range where 99% of my shooting takes place, the lighting is weird and the fiber optic rod is just to small. I wish they made a larger diameter FO insert. Something similar to the Wilson Combat FO front.

Thanks for the info.

Besides lowlight / indoor conditions, how does the RO shoot with the fixed rear sight compared to the adjustable target rear sight? Any noticeable accuracy changes?

ETA: Those are some really nice looking pistols! Love how that RO looks!

ETAA: Sorry OP, not trying to highjack your thread.

I prefer the Fixed sight as I hate adjustable sights (got the RO for a good price). It has a .156 opening, it may hinder in shooting for groups, but I am a min of barn shooter so it has not bothered me.
