Hey all,

I turned 21 about a week ago, and a few days after bought my first handgun. I really wanted a 1911, but decided to buy an XD instead of spending all of my money on one gun. I picked up a service model 45 mainly for shooting, and to conceal, which since I'm still in college, won't be that often. I wasn't looking for one without a thumb safety, but after finding one new for $400, decided to get it. My question is: does it still have all the internal safeties that the one without the thumb safeties have when the safety is off, or they only on when the safety is on? The reason I ask this is because I was wondering if the gun was safe to carry with the safety off, or if I should just practice turning it off as I draw the gun. Thanks in advance for your replies.

The thumb safety is in addition to standard safety features the XD has.

Sweet, thanks for the replies guys. Links like I'll carry safety off, and only use it at the range. I've taken so many safety classes in the boy scouts that's it kindof habit, but it's nice to know that the gun is still drop safe with it off for ccw.

The only thing I'd be concerned of is accidentally activating the safety while holstering, or something like that. Maybe, when you practice drawing, still practice sweeping the safety off, just in case. Just a suggestion

One step ahead of you. I have pretty large hands, and therefore a pretty large thumb. I've been practicing drawing and slide my thumb down the side of the slide, both with the safety off and on. It shouldn't be an issue.
