Posted this in GD before I remembered there is a handgun forum.

Wife's parents are selling her grandpa's S&W Model 10 M&P. Blued, 4" barrel, .38SPL. Probably around 100 rounds through it total. Wife's grandpa bought it probably back in the 60's to take on cross-country trips. Her dad and I probably fired it more than he did. Immaculate condition and IIRC, not a scratch on it. Still has the original box and paperwork I think.

What would be a fair price for it? I want to keep it in the family but I don't want to pay a ton of money for a .38 revolver either.

Thanks

If you say he bought it new in the 60s,I would assume it is indeed a model 10, and not an M&P.

If in 95%+ with original box, with all accessories a good family price would be 300-400.

Withiut pictutes, it's hard to say though.

Just bought a 10-5 (1969) in about 98% condition with excellent box, papers, cleaning tools, etc. for $535. Had receipt from Oct. 1969 too. 4" pencil barrel was exactly what I was looking for. Looked at a few beat up ones at between $350 - $400.

This sounds about right.  The beat to hell security trade ins are $350-ish, with shipping and ffl you're pushing $400.  A 1960's gun should have a C serial number.  The D series started in 68 or 69.

I collect Model Tens.  Clean ones are getting harder to find.

Thanks fellas.  From what everyone is saying, somewhere between $300-$500 sounds fair.  I was thinking $400.  Just have to see what he wants to do.

I'm hoping to pick up a 1905 model .38 Special (dates 1917) 5" RB all original with about 95% finish soon.  Not many like that left!

I like newer guns well enough but they definitely don't have the same kind of class the old blued steel and wood guns have.

Do they need the cash that badly or are they just weird?  If it's a family type item why not just give it to you or at least sell it to you cheap?  If they need the cash then yeah I'd offer around four and see if they took it, if they're just odd and you really want it then I'd probably start lower and work my way up to around $500.  I guess it all depends on what it's worth to you.

I've been looking for a 4in heavy barrel model 10 for a while.  Hard to find one in good shape locally.  Most were worked hard.

Southern Ohio gun has them in very good to excellent condition for $339.00. Only reason I know is a guy I work with just ordered one. At that price I'm strongly considering getting one for my first revolver.

No, they don't need the cash; just tired of keeping them.  They're not into guns that much and have no sentimental attachment to it.  I'm their daughter's husband, not blood.  If it were my family, no money would trade hands but I guess that's the way they are.  I don't like it but I want to keep the pistol in the family so I guess I'll pay.  Not paying more than $400 though.

Centerfire Systems has them for 299, and stainless model 64s for 320.

Just picked up a 64 last weekend. It was all crudded up from not being cleaned, but shot great and cleaned up well.

For a Model 10 from the '60s in the condition described by the OP? You're dreaming.

I would not feel taken advantage of if I got a really nice Model 10 for 4 bills.  Heck even one that was a little beat but in good working order I probably wouldn't either.  Around here they can go for more than that.
