I have one gun on my want list, and it's an expensive, impractical beast. Today Davidson's Gun Genie sent me an email saying it's back in stock. They had one for sale. I waited overnight, and expected it to be gone, but it was still there in the morning, so I ordered it.

Smith & Wesson Performance Center 627 snubbie. Brand spanking new. I've wanted one ever since I saw Woody Harrelson's character using one in HBO's True Detective.

It's gonna be heavy, impractical, more difficult to conceal, and it has a Hillary hole. But I love it.

I'll post a pic after I get it. Oh, and it was expensive too. Gonna have to sell a few old toys to pay the CC bill, but damn, it makes me happy.

ETA: Recommend me a neat grip for an N-Frame round butt that will be conceal carried, that's a little bit meatier than this little boot grip. Thanks!

Dealer called me today. I'm going to pick it up after work. Will post a pic or two. Interested to see the crown. I had a 637 with a crappy crown several years ago, that Cabela's exchanged for me. Since got rid of that gun. I was hoping that a PC gun would have a better fit & finish. I hope so.

Crown looks okay. I had no idea it was cut for moon clips. I'm a happy camper right now. Test fire marks on three of the 8 cylinder chambers. Pristine around the other five, so at least I got a new gun. I have a plug coming, and I'm gonna get rid of the Hillary lock.

ETA: Dry fires nice. Tight lock-up. Timing seems good. Yeah, color me pleased. One ding on it though, is the stock grip. I guess the days of a custom fitted grip are gone, unless you're paying for a ground-up custom job. Can you remember the good old days when the grips had the same serial no. as the gun? They were all custom fitted in those days. Even the bargain basement ones. Sigh.

Check the EE for my for sale stuff...

Nice!   I don't think the face of my cylinder has ever been that clean.

Check out Revolver Supply for more moonclips if you want more.   Theirs are a Great value.   If you got money to burn look at TK Custom.   Their moonclips are extremely nice but are significant more costly.

Now go shoot it!

Pretty sure this is my new woods gun. I have a holster for a 4" N frame. Guess I'll have to get a new one for this. I have some HSM bear loads, and I think I'll just carry it with those when outdoors in potential black bear & cougar country.

Nice - I do like the bead blasted look over stainless which I am not a fan. I look forward to a range report!

Very nice revolver, I have a 5 inch 627 8-shot and its one of my favorites. I keep my moon clips loaded and ready for the range. Not sure if the short grip on the stubby would work for me.

Nice revolver OP and Warhawk... I really need to stay out of this sub-forum because I know I'm going to end up with a like revolver as I have (3) nice snubbies now and I don't need another! I'll be damned if that has ever stopped me from getting one though.

Do you mostly shoot .357's out of them or .38Spec +P's?

I recently sold a PTR-91 online, and got offered at least two of those 627 snubs straight across (it's a nice PTR-91!).

Magnum class (some, like the 10mm, don't have "magnum" in the name but pretty much are) really deserve a longer barrel.  At least 4".  My shortest barreled magnum gun is 5" and that's the short end of perfect.

They are nice guns but give me a 627PC 5" anytime.

So far I prefer my .38 +P handloads (FBI load).  It's damn loud with magnums.

Well, Okay, I ordered those new Pachmayr Diamond grips, the reviews on Amazon, and everywhere really like them, and like them better than the old decelerator grips.

I also ordered a plug for the Hillary hole, and a Simply Rugged Sourdough pancake.

I tried CCing it this weekend in my Comfortac belly band. It worked, but it was a bit heavy. I was worried it was going to fall down inside my pants. I also had to take it off and leave it in the car, because we went in a federal building (museum) over the weekend, and getting it back on without disrobing was a PITA.

Good times.

That's a neat revolver, I carry a 4" N frame everywhere, it's easy to do in AZ, and I think in UT as well. As opposed to in a east coast/west coast city.
In AZ/UT the outdoor recreation vibe is strong, that makes a stupid number of "clothes that'll cover an N frame" unobtrusive and normal to the public eye.
Enjoy the gun. Maybe consider Pachmeyer stocks.

I can't imagine concealed carrying an N-frame.  Belt carry in the open, sure, no problem.  I do that all the time with my N-frames.  How, when you're trying to conceal that big revolver, do you not end up looking like you have a huge tumor on one side of your body.  Maybe I could do it under a winter coat but in anything close to regular clothing I don't see how I could pull it off.

Well, I'm 6'4" and 350 lbs. It disappears under a T-shirt.

I've conceal carried a Ruger Redhawk 5.5" in an OWB pancake holster before.

Lot's (relatively) of people  not only imagine it but do it.
Obviously they don't go all skinny jean/wife beater, that prob wouldn't work out. Or tights and a tank top (for the fitter type of women out there).
My Wife/Chic is pretty fit, and in the right clothes she can do it. But she wouldn't 'cause the flat narrow 1911 is where she lives.
In an office it might (or might not) be difficult.
I sometimes pocket carry a 4", the grip is mostly outside the pocket, so the right shirt has to be worn.
Some people are just goofy I guess. And, dress differnt than others.
Some people have goofy hobbies

Gas checked? OAL? Would that be determined by the bullet?

IME - OAL doesn't play as much of a role in reloading for wheelguns as long as it fits comfortably inside the cylinder of your gun.

As for grips, check out Ahrends grips. They're my favorites.

I thought OAL was critical for preventing overpressure rounds.

You can't completely ignore OAL in a revolver but it is less critical in a revolver than a semi auto, especially if you go longer than the recipe calls for.  Going shorter is going to cause a pressure increase (and a velocity increase), possibly a dangerous pressure increase depending on load; this is not advised.  Going longer is going to cause a pressure decrease (and a loss in velocity) this posses no real safety issues.  In a semi auto going too long causes magazine and feeding problems.  A revolver only requires that you are not longer that your cylinder and you're good to go.

Pretty much what ^^^ he said. It matters, but you can be off by a fair amount and it won't really hurt much. In most modern revolvers, the pressure isn't going to break anything, so the biggest issues are inconsistencies with what the shooter experiences. If you're going to be bullseye shooting, then yeah, it's probably worth your time. However, it's not like in a magazine fed gun where you have to worry about reliability and feeding problems. Get it close and for the most part you can just run with it.

Those grips look nice.  I have Pachmayr Presentation grips on my round butt N frame 625.  They were the only grips big enough to keep the gun from jumping around in my hand.

I just crimp in the crimp groove depending on the bullet. I don't think OAL Is critical.

The actual FBI load uses a 158 gr swaged Hollow point. The Hornady #10428 is an example. I have some of these, but usually load a 158gr cast SWC.

Nevr Dull metal polish wadding removes all of the carbon and lead.  It makes a stainless gun look unfired.  Try it out!

With the short barrel, I would be worried that magnums would set my nose hairs on fire!

Interesting might have to try that.  But on the other hand I sort of like the dirty look.
