I am looking at a collection of 6 29-2's : 3 nickel and 3 blued, 4", 6.5", and 8 3/8" barrelled versions of each finish. All are in excellent collector grade condition, either unfired or fired VERRRY little. All are N serial mid-late 70's manufacture, and all are P&R, 3T guns with either factory target or presentation smooth grips.

No boxes or paper with any of them unfortunately. Pretty much all the same price, $950 each for the 6" and 8" blued version, $1K each for the 4" blued and all the nickel versions.

Unfortunately I don't have $6K just laying around to buy all, so if you had to pick JUST ONE, (or maybe two ), which one would you pick and if more than one which order. The only other Smith 44 Mag I have is a 6" 629-4 which I love and is arguably a beefier and more advanced design, but damn those old p&r 29's are sweet.

Spoiler alert:

I'm leaning 4" nickel or 4" blued in that order.

For an "N" frame a 5 inch barrel is perfect balance.

4 inch blued and the 6 1/2 inch blued.

Agreed, but it is not an option. If I found a 5" factory M29-2 for $1K, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Kinda wish I would have bought the 5" M27 I found a few months back though.

Blued, and particularly 4" blued in the lead so far. Thanks, and keep the recommendations coming fellas.

1- 4" nickel
2- 6.5" blue
3- 4" blue
4- 6.5" nickel

I don't have any interest in the 8 3/8 guns

You have a 6" so I'd go with whichever 4" you like the best.

Of those listed the most valuable would be the. 6.5 nickel.
I don't care much for nickel and passionately hate stainless, so my preference would be blue.
83/8 are pretty much hunting guns and I don't care for the balance, and four inch do not allow the potential of the cartridge performance to show, so the 6.5 is a good compromise

I would think the 4 inch guns are the rarest . I would go 4 inch.

Well shit, I snoozed I loozed and didn't make it to the LGS until early this afternoon (effing work). Some dude came in this morning and bought all 4 of the 4" and 6" 29's . So only 8 3/8" nickel and blued left. Oh well, it would have just been a safe queen, I'm a lucky man to own my 629-4, and there's a million other things I should spend the money on now so "oh well" but damn.

Pass me a Kleenex, would you. This will go into my "right guns, right price, wrong time" sniffles file.

I was gonna say the 4" Nickel.  No contest for me.  But I guess it's a moot point.

I have a collection of 629s, but not a one is a standard 629, 3 classics, 2 Mountain Guns, one Mountain Backpacker, and one Carry Comp.

My choice as well; 4" first then 6 1/2" both blue.

That sucks.  I made the same mistake once when I had a beautiful unfired Shiloh Sharps .45-70 rifle in my hands but stupidly decided to "think about it".  The next person who saw it didn't make the same mistake.

4" nickel. I have one. It's a gaudy beast.   I wouldn't want her any shorter or any longer

I would buy the 4" Nickel one first, then the 4" Blued after that, and work your way out to the longer barrel lengths.  The shorter barreled ones are more likely to have been shot at some point, so the better condition you can get them in now, the better off you are.  The longer ones are much more likely to remain in the condition they are in now as nobody tends to shoot them and just leave them in the safe, you should be able to get them in the same condition later.

I prefer 4" barrels and am not a fan of nickel...so...4" blue gets my vote.

I know, right? The 8 3/8" guns are sold now too. Didn't take long, that's for sure.

My 629-4 will have to suffice for now.

Find a long barreled model 29, cut to 5"s, install Weigand front sight. Perfection.

Better luck next time!!!

You didn't happen to get a pic of that 4" nickel, did you?

Had all of those at one time or other.   Your 629 is the best of the bunch for a general use revolver.   Be happy, I would.

I am, love my 629 and to be honest any of those 29's would have been safe queens for the most part. They were in really nice shape and I prefer stainless for a pack gun due to ease of care.

Perfect. Know why I know this?

Oh, and I'd grab both of those 3" for my meager collection!

unless one of the 4" or nickeled guns came with presentation grips, the prices were nothing special without box and docs.
