Nice. I don't know much about S&W but don't all older 36s have pinned barrels?

True, this one is from the 1980s post - 1982 when the pinned barrels were dropped.

http://www.migunowners.org/forum/showthread.php?92503-Production-date-of-a-S-amp-W-Model-36&s=1715a6c5a669fd624bd6d0370ff43f44

For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50 and pre model number versions.

1950 = start at 1
1952 = 7369 - 21342
1953 = 28916
1955 = 55050 - 75000
1957 = 117770 - 125000
1962 = starts at 295000
1969 = ends at 786544

J serial Prefix serial numbers.
For models 36, 37, 38, 49, 50.

1969-1970 = J1 - J99999
1971-1972 = 1J1 - 999J99
1973-1974 = J100000 - J250000
1975-1976 = J250001 - J370000
1976-1977 = J370001 - J610000
1977-1978 = J610001 - J670000
1979-1980 = J670001 - J760000
1981 = J760001 - J915400
1982 = J915401 - 1J18600
1983 = 1J18601 - 1JXXXX

1955 - 4 screw side plate ends
1957 - stamping of model number at 125000
1966 - flat latch ends
1968 - diamond grips end
1975 - heavy barrel standard
1982 - end pinned barrel

Dumbest thing I've ever done in my life was to sell this very revolver.  Made good money off the deal, but I regret it to this day.

Actually, the dumbest thing I've ever done is buy a boat, but selling this revolver was a close second.

I'll keep that I'm mind.

It was purchased as a project gun with a botched trigger job and rust specks. It was too cute to pass up.

My intention is to present it to my lady over the holidays. The grip/trigger guard are a bit too stubby for me.

With some wadcutter target ammo and low recoil defense stuff, it should work out well for her. Its a nice weight falling between the Airweights and steel J Magnums. She hates the Airweight and even my eight year old likes shooting the steel framed J so it should work out well.

I guess to some this is a snub. It was the shortest barrel length for some time.

Stunning!  That is my holy grail in firearms.

Thanks!

It was one for me, too.

The best part was finding it local for ~1/3 of typical market values.

No box or papers, and a deep scratch on the sideplate keep it from being 100%.

My intention was to pamper it, but it gets carried on occasion and is an absolute blast (literally) and joy to shoot at the range with magnums. The heft of those thick cylinders really tames the beast.

My 3 1/2 inch pre 27 is pictured earlier in the thread. A previous owner hard chromed it, ruined the collector value, but I love it. It's just not as pretty or authentic as a nickel gun.
