My wife got this 586 for her birthday in 1995. We paid a price that seems unbelievable now, $339.19 out the door. She used it several times in a local indoor steel plate competition. The photo doesnt do the deep blueing justice. The cyclender gap is so narrow its hard to see. No end shake. locks up like a bank vault. Smooth as glass double action pull. Single action is crisp and light. Best double action revolver trigger Ive ever tried.

I once shot a 1.5" 6-shot group with it, off hand at 25-yards with Federal 158Gn JSP .357 Mag. It may be the most accurate handgun I have ever fired. It's spent the last 15-years in the back of the safe. just took it out to put a couple drops of CLP on it today.

The MIM and hammer lock guns they sell now are just not the same at all.

You ain't lying.  I have a Smith 25 in .45acp made in '61.  Shoots like a dream.  Deep, rich bluing.  Trigger to die for.  The newer Smith's have no soul.

Friend of mine tried to sell me a new in box 629.
It looked like shit compared to my older 29.

A 586 is high on my want list.  I have a model 28 Highway Patrolman but i still lust after a 586.

You mean you guys don't like these

Seriously though, I love the old S&W wheel guns.  I still think S&W makes one hell of a revolver if they would get rid of that idiotic lock they could sell a lot more of them.  I think the actions in them today are comparable to the older guns.  Smooth DA and crisp, light SA break.  I hate the stupid rubber grips too but at least I was able to remedy that with these "coke bottle" style target grips from Eagle.  Even have the S&W medallions in them.  That 4" 586 in the OP is beautiful and Smith's blue was the best.  In 20 years the price has doubled, to be expected, and I guess if they did make them like they used to the price would be triple or 4 times that $339. in the OP.  I long for a time machine.  Haha

Combat Masterpiece, pre mod.

Who would buy one of these if S&W made them like this today?

Not to derail the thread, but I've had four new production S&W revolvers and they've all been exceptional.

One of them even wears a fancy factory finish.

I have a pre model as well, and aside from historical and collector value I don't necessarily buy into the "better" argument. Sure when hand fitting and machine work is traded for precision molded and CNC machined components the romanticism is lost, but that doesn't make them any worse, especially as a shooter.

Guns like this are interesting, irreplaceable, and commanding ever higher values, so their utility as a shooter and field piece is greatly diminished.

If they made them like that now they would be $1500 - that's the short answer.

20-Year old S&W 586, why can they make them like this anymore?

My wife got this 586 for her birthday in 1995.

...and that is past the golden age of S&W. A handejector or registered magnum is even a much, much nicer gun!

They've never been the same since getting rid of that triple lock. ..

In the age of CNC machining, I don't see why it would be that way, IMO...................

Nice looking gun, I much prefer these to the hand cannons they are pushing today.

Beautiful unmolested 586 there.

Some of those guns actually got used.

Say hello to "Stinkbutt"
(so named this 686-5 due to the gooshy Hogue grips having absorbed the "cologne" scent of the P.O.)

What I REALLY want is a set of DENIM micarta grips for Stinkbutt.

I might even get her bead-blasted if I could ever find a set.

Cost. As has been mentioned. I have been to the S&W factory armorer class and the instructor spent a few minutes (he has been there 20 years) explaining the difference in time the CNC/MIM parts take .vs hand fitting.....amazing is what the price would be today. I don't own anything newer than about 1982 from S&W.

Don't see myself getting anything either...

I would have "stinkbutt" bead-blasted to a matte satin look, and install these
