This one's on layaway, and will be mine soon enough.

The lock doesn't bother me. There's fixes for that.

Where did you get the plug?

The one pictured was purchased. The gent making them is no longer doing so. The one for the 649 I made out of a high grade stainless screw.

How are you getting along with that Airweight?

I'm a little embarrassed to say so, but mine is probably my favorite revolver. That little thing flat out shoots!

Well I admittedly haven't shot it again yet.  Just dry firing and carrying it every day.  So I should say I'm getting along well.  I haven't shot lately because my range has this rule where you have to do a safety walk every three years and I'm overdo.  And they didn't send me a key in January until I get "upgraded".  And there are limited times for that to happen.  I'll probably go very soon to a public range because I'm really itching to see what a +p feels like in it.  I am just carrying the 125 grain hornady XTP bullet Load.  I forget the name.  But I got some of the recommended speer gold dot short barrel 135 grain +p and some corbon DPX 110 +p.  Oh I have some Golden Sabers +p's too.  But not sure I'd carry those or not.

I probably won't like it, but I still was kind of blown away about how manageable standard loads were in it.  Although I know some of it that I shot was pmc which I think falls in the lighter category.

Plus P is no big deal. It's moderately more recoil. Unless recoil sensitive I find the difference negligible. The heaviest recoiling ammo I've found so far is some vintage 38spl target load that was quite a fire cracker. The lightweight high velocity stuff seems to consistently be the least pleasant. That said, anytime I go to the range I shoot the little guy and enjoy it thoroughly.

I am recoil sensitive.    Not really sure to what degree.  But I like avoiding inducing a flinch.

A sad day. My 642 (no dash, pre MIM or lock) went to the range with me, firing factory standard pressure Federal ammo, and came back with this.

RIP

Hopefully S&W customer service will be helpful.

I've read on the internetz of Smith Helping people out with cracked frames like this.  It's one of the more common failures of the aluminum frames.

Worst case I bet they might give you a good deal on a similar gun.

Went to the range with my 442 Yesterday.

Yes, I suck.  I know.  7 yards.  I kept shots within 8"  I need to do better.

It was 30 rounds there.  10 wadcutters, 10 Speer Gold dot 135 grain +p and 10 of the Hornady American Gunner 125 grain XTP.

I actually drew blood from the takedown lever on my right thumb.  But it was from the Hornady.  Not the Speer.
i
But after the speer, I was anticipating.  I saw shove when I wen past the 5th round and dropped the hammer on a fired round.  When I was shooting the other loads, I didn't.  It also hurt just a tiny bit in the palm.  I could deal with the palm feeling for a bit, but the anticipation is always what makes me leary about shooting rounds that are beyond my ability in recoil.  Even in a Self Defense shooting I think it could be an issue.  I think I'm going to stick with the Hornady for now for my carry rounds.  Interesting note though.  They didn't feel THAT much lighter than the Speer.  And they're not +p.  I was kind of surprised at how much power they had.  Last range session I was shooting some 132 PMC gold and they felt almost like wadcutters.  And then the wadcutters I could shoot all day long.  And they're so much more accurate.  LOL.  Maybe I should carry some quality wadcutters in the cylinder and have my reloads be the Hornady or Speer.

Summer rig: No lock 340PD with Mika's Pocket holster and S.L. Variant speed loader. Light, clean, fast and reliable. Best pocket carry combo I have found yet.

I'm liking those grips.  Looks like they'd give some good texture for firing, yet let your clothes glide over them.  Plus they look good.  I really like that blue with the stainless.  What brand are those?

they are hogue extreme G10's they are not completely smooth, very comfortable to shoot with.

I didn't realize till after I took the pic that I didn't put the screws in them. couldn't decide what color I liked better on the black one. both colors looked good but the blue looked the best on the stainless

I had an uncle who used this old Smith to safeguard his store in a little Virginia town, back in the day.  That revolver's descendant carries on the Smith & Wesson tradition of lightweight, compact revolvers.

I'd ask for more of the Colt if it wasn't a J frame thread.  But great pics of your 642!!!!!
