I like that 60 a LOT. And yeah, that Model 13 is pretty awesome JBT. The GP100 is probably a really good gun, but I don't like the way they look. I know, stupid reason to not like it. LOL.

Thanks... I love carrying it off duty...

Kills on one end and maims on the other end.  357 Mag in an 11.4oz revolver is quite the experience.

Love my 342.

You should get a standard size (not big dot) XS front night sight installed.

Yeah, the .357's aren't fun at all. It bruises my palm and I can feel it all the way up in my shoulder. I can do about 3 cylinders and I'm done. I practice with +p's and then finish with the magnums. It isn't really that bad. I shoot it about once every other week.

If you had the eye those are .38 special +p Speer Gold Dot short barrel rounds. i used to carry with the Speer gold dot magnums but it was too much.

Yes sir, that would be the next best thing to a K frame round butt 3".  I bet that thing is a joy to shoot.  At least with .38's.  I'm not sure it would be joyful with .357's though.  Now what kind of grips are those?  Did Smith make "Combat" grips for a round butt J frame?  That's what they kind of look like.
View Quote

Yes, they are Smith Combat grips. They have S&W's telephone number printed on them. Not sure if they are original from the factory or not, but my 686-4+ paperwork from ~1996-97 has an insert that has these identical grips. They are still available on handgungrips.com and a variation on Smiths website.

From handgungrips.com.

And on S&W's site.

I'll play. This is Model 60(no dash) Chiefs Special I bought second hand, unfired and in the original box from a coworker. My mother, about to be 76, has now claimed it. Thanks to "RC51_Texas" for the grip, she can manage it well.

Just to bump this thread.

My maiden voyage with my 442.  I'm guessing a lot of you saw it in my range report.

My latest dilemma is finding the right round for carrying.  AND, I need a new holster.  I've got two and they both have ups and downs.  I usually carry it in a uncle mikes medium auto holster.  It really works well for comfort, but it sits kind of low.  But it sits in there with a bit of a forward cant.  Which makes it perfect.  And then I have a galco leather one that has no forward cant but is higher.  So I can grab it easier, but it's not as comfy and it prints easier.  So I gotta find an IWB that cants forward a bit and sits high enough to grab without my belt in the way.

Couple pics of my 642. Rough around the edges but still functions 100% after surviving a motorcycle accident with me a couple years ago. This is one of the few guns I'll never let go.

Here is what happens when you run too hot a load through one.  These were loads that I had been running through a Ruger 77/357.  They seemed okay in the rifle so I stuck some in the smith. On the second shot cylinder went kaboom.   Sent if off to Smith to see if the problem was with the cylinder.  They sold me a replacement for 25% off, and it is currently my daily carry gun.

The 642 I posted above has around 2,500 rds through it between the original owner(good friend of mine) and myself.

The load was 5 grains of unique under a cast 195 grain bullet. Mid range load according to the data I found.  I had fired about 30 rounds through a Ruger 77/357 with no problems and decided to try them in the smith.  No double charge. I use a flashlight and check the powder height in every case before putting a slug on top.

Nice of them to offer you a big discount on the replacement. That had to sting a bit when it touched off.

It's interesting that 90% of blown up guns are blown by reloads but only 10% of reloaders admit they may have made a mistake.

Anyway...

Just picked up a 1952 baby J. It has some minor holster wear, buggered screws, and had push off issues due to a Bubba trigger job.

20150322_004932 by Slick_Rick77, on Flickr

Once I get a proper set of grips on it it'll be good to go. I fixed the push off issue earlier today.

I normally don't take in troubled guns, but this one was irresistible.

Sile. Most out there were made in the 80's. They feel ok, but the checkering isn't very defined and they are a bit bulky...and ugly.

At first I used to think they were so ugly with that weird angle and no hammer.  But the looks have grown on me.  After shooting mine and liking it a lot (442), it takes on a new look.  hehehehe

One thing that strikes me that seems to aid in shootability is that it seems like the way the shape of the frame is, allows you to put it deep in your hand and the barrel is not as high over your hands as a lot of other revolvers.  You know how a lot of people talk about a Glocks "low bore axis".  Well that sucker has a pretty low bore axis. IMHO.

I've noted that many carry HPs in their snubs.  Real world shootings have shown that most of the time, when shooting out of snubs, that they very very rarely open up, and tend to have similar wound characteristics of round nose projectiles.

Hot loaded Wadcutters tend to cut impressive wound channels and penetrate well. Check out Doc GKRs extensive earch on the subject.

Cheers

The .32 Mag is a lot of fun, and can be stepped up. Buffalo Bore makes a +P 100 grain HP that will clock almost 1300 FPS from a 3" bbl. More than 300 FP of energy will at least get someone's attention.

I ordered the 3" bbl specifically to get a little more oomph out of it. I also like that it's a 6 shot J Frame. Women I've shot with (none of them very experienced shooters) much preferred the .32 Mag over the .357's.

New carry gat! Pre-MIM, pre lock, still roll marked (not lasered) 642 no dash. Finish is much closer looking to stainless steel than the modern ones. Overall its pretty nice I guess for a no frills carry gat

I do love comparing the sideplate gap on the new ones to the oldest J frame though:

Some people hate them but I love them. No, it doesn't wobble cant. It stays put. Just bend the tab a little to get it to make a tighter fit. I have used them for YEARS.
