Between this old 442 no dash and my Glock 19, I have all the CCW I need.
Sometimes I carry the 442 in a Galco pocket holster but lately it has been IWB.

The Glock is usually in a Galco IWB also.

Never go out without one or the other.  Most of the time, it's the 442 and a quick strip with +p Hydrashocks.

I only practice with regular 38 loads though.

I have the EXACT EDC loadout as you. I dont have a holster for the 442 just yet, because I just bought it a couple weeks ago. Is the galco iwb comfy?

I completely agree, and the 3" 650 .22 Mag is one of my grail guns. Until I can snag a 650, here is the next best thing, a 'Jovino' 3" Square butt Model 60 .38 Special that I just added to the collection:

I used to have a 651 (4", adj sites, .22 Mag, J frame).  Almost got the 650 but wanted a trail gun.  Would love to have either again.

I picked it up off of Gunbroker for $649. Was just listed as a 3" Model 60. Like the 650, they average $800 - 1200. There were only about 1,000 square butt 3" Model 60's made.

There was a run of 174 pinned barrel guns made in the 70's, then John Jovino ordered 1,000 combined 2 and 3" square butt Model 60's with the majority being 3" in 1984. So only about 1000 out there.

Thought I'd share my 4. I just the got the 649-5 and plan to get "the plug" to do away with that stupid lock. The Airweights wearing the Eagle Secret Service grips get the most carry time. The 38-2 is always on me.

Worked out a trade with my old man for a BHP in 40 that I never really bonded with.  Lacking anything in 38/357, I am eyeballing his M27 (6" blued, from the late 60's) or this Model 60 w/ 5" barrel.  This would normally be an easy call for me--I'll take the old gun.   But after carrying this around all week, I think I've made my choice.  It's an outstanding field gun.

Found some Hogue Tamer grips

How do you like them ?

They feel really good, one handed and two.  I have yet to fire it yet though.  I'm hoping the rubber soaks up some recoil because these airweights weigh like nothing.  My DS isn't overly stiff, but this is like 10 ounces lighter.  I plan on starting with wadcutters and lighter bullets.  I have a lot of 130 grain fmj.  Well pmc's are 132.  I'm not sure I even want to try +p's.  I guess I'll have to see.

Yeah. That's a big hunk of rubber.

The Galco works quite well for an inexpensive holster. I did adjust the cant on the belt snap to work best.

Wow, that's the complaint I have on mine and I didn't notice it until you said.  You cut the threads and resowed that back on?  You are gooooooooood.  I would've never thought of that!!!

You won't believe this but I've actually carried my M9 and also my 1911 in that holster.  The one without the snap.  But if it was canted about 20 degrees forward it would be perfect.  When I do those I only do them if I have my jacket on or a flannel.  Or I don't think I'm going to be sitting down or bending where someone can see me.

I have a specific question about 442's.

From my recollection, my Step Dad bought the one I have now, at Cabela's about 5 years ago.  Or so.  But it's marked 442-1.  Does that sound right?  I don't know the history behind the 442 and how many dashes it's supposed to have.  I guess I could call the factory.  I was just curious if somehow I misunderstood him and it was in fact used when he bought it.  It doesn't look like it though.  He carried it some and shot it a little.

I apologize for inundating every thread with my pic.  I'm just excited.

The -1 is the current production without the internal lock.

The -2 adds the IL.

I'm unsure of the earlier "no dash" guns.

Each "dash" represents an engineering change.

First run guns without a dash were also not +P rated IIRC

-1 and -2 are +P rated.

There were a few -2 made without the lock before they reverted to marking them -1s.  Both are currently still being produced.

Good to know.  Thanks guys.

I know on Stephen Camp's website he shows that he has one called an 042, which I think must be the predecessor to the 442.  But pretty much looks the same.

JJ,

Should be Model 42 Airweight Centennial with no "0" in the model.  It came out as the Airweight Centennial and had the grip safety on the frame in 1952.  In 1957 it was renamed the Model 42.  Discontinued in 1974.  Smith re introduced it in post 2000 in the Classic line as the Model 42-2 and is +P rated.  The 442/642 are Airweight Centennials without the grip safety.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh.  Thanks.

I think this might be what I was thinking.  The one in the holster he calls a 42.  I thought he somewhere else called it a 042, but maybe not.

He does refer to a overstamped 6 into 0 here for some 642 frames that were later darkened.  Looks like I'm still learning.  My 442 Pro has a blued steel barrel with darkened aluminum frame and darkened  stainless steel cylinder.

The moon clips would make it super nice.  I tried a safariland speedloader and I'm not sure if I like it better.  It seems like it allows the shells to insert a hair easier than the HKS but I'm so used to twisting the HKS knobs.  And this one you have to push down until you hear that click and it lets em loose.  On the HKS sometimes one round doesn't want to drop that freely right away because it's like too tight against the grip or frame or something.

Anyways....  Overstamped 642's, that makes sense.  Any way I slice it, I'm liking my 442 also.  The weight and size makes it feel like it's not even there.  Yet I'm still shooting it better than the DS.  I do like that extra round though.  Maybe someday I'll get a K frame 3" round butt for carrying.

Yes sir, that would be the next best thing to a K frame round butt 3".  I bet that thing is a joy to shoot.  At least with .38's.  I'm not sure it would be joyful with .357's though.  Now what kind of grips are those?  Did Smith make "Combat" grips for a round butt J frame?  That's what they kind of look like.
