I carry this 442 every day as a detective. It's my BUG. Though quite often when initially making contact with a person whom I don't know if they are going to be a threat or not, I casually have my left hand in my front pocket.

It causes less issues than to have my hand on my exposed primary duty gun.  Once I determine that they are not likely a threat, I just slide my hand out of my pocket and continue with the contact.  The little J Frame is perfect for the role. It's been a reliable companion for close to 15 years now.

J-frames are tough to beat as a BUG.

I've carried one on my ankle or vest for my entire career (coming up on 20) the last 15 of which has been either plain clothes or UC.

I'll post some pics later.

I'll post pics later but my personal favorite J-Frame is my S&W M&P 340CT.

Mine came from the factory with no lock, Trijicon front sight, Crimson Trace grip.

Highly corrosion resistant alloy/stainless materials, super light and easy to carry, .38/.357 dual caliber capable, highly reliable, effortless pocket carry, better trigger than my previous 340PD.

Obvioulsly not a fun range gun, but for its intended role, virtually without peer.

Got one of the first runs of 442s in 91' that I used for years till I traded it in 06'  Later got a used 2" M60 with the KSP seal on it and miss that one.  Used to carry it when fishing in Kentucky.  Carried the Federal 125gr Nyclads for decades.

Now I carry a 442 Pro in my front left pocket also.

Been shooting a revolver so much in competition that I switched over my carry gun last year to a S&W 442 Pro (moonclip).  I find pocket carry works pretty well for me.

I've seen more guns with trigger failures than lock failures.

The lock still sucks, but most revolvers these days have an IL, just not in such an obvious place.

It's less of a problem than the 'net makes it out to be.

It's easy to disable, remove, and/or plug.

Lock guns I've put a lot of rounds through: 638, 686SSR, 327 and 325 Night Guards (scandium N frames). Lots of rounds, no problems. If you want to disable it it's stupid easy, but I'm fine with people still panicking about the lock. More cheap lock guns for me

I'm kind of excited in that I might be able to contribute to this thread by the end of the month, LORD willing.  My stepfather passed away over the summer and he had a newer no lock 442.  Not sure how many rounds but I"m guessing in the neighborhood of less than 200.  My Mom needs the money for hospital bills and I'm going to be buying it from her.  It will be my carry gun while my Colt DS goes back for timing work.

So, I'm hoping I can hit something with it.

What is a good holster to have for one of these, IWB strong side right?  Doesn't Milt Sparks make one?

No, 2" square butt J frames aren't that common.  I got my mother a similar one but stainless (M60) back in the early 90s.

Funny I did the same thing. Knew a guy over on the Smith forum years back, who was NYPD and got model 10s and j frames cheap. I picked my mom up a square butt 36 that was a retired detectives gun. Got my wife a nickel plated 442 as well.

Awesome little guns.

Been collecting revolvers over the past few years and picked up these two nice J frames:

Top is a 940 9mm and bottom is a Model 60. Carry the Model 60 sometimes. Really like them both. Last time out to the plinking range, was hitting soda cans with it at about 25 yards.

Those pachmyrs seem like they'd be a good compromise between hogue rubber (allowing clothes to stick) and wood (sometimes a little too slippery).

How do you like them?  Are they better than the rubber S&W ones?

Those are really nice JeepinSoldier.  A while back I was looking at Jovino's and people usually want a pretty penny for them.  But I agree a 3" would be really good.

We're you hitting soda cans with the top one or the 60 on single action?  If you're telling me you were hitting soda cans in double action at 25 yards, I'm going to cry.  LOL.  I can't do that.  But I guess I have something to shoot for.  I don't know if I can do that with any handgun with any regularity (besides lucky shots) other than my Colt Huntsman.  Now that thing makes it easy on a guy to be accurate.

You got me! Another shooter started shooting at them with a CZ 75 (Nice gun) and missed them all with an entire magazine.

I then took the Model 60 and single action shot 5 of the cans off of the old TV in succession. All out there were amazed I could do that with a snubnosed .38. Actually it was just a great little gun, carefully made handloads, and 43 years worth of practice LOL!

Then reset the cans and shot all of them off again with the CZ 75. Took another hour or so and had the CZ's owner hitting them too!

I can usually hit soda cans at 25 yards DA slow fire with my 625 Model of 1988 5" .45 ACP. It has had trigger work and is amazingly accurate. Its also heavy with the full underlug and recoils pretty light. That gun makes all who shoot it look like masters!

There's no doubt in my mind that a good snubby in the right hands can be an accurate gun.  I'm just not anywhere near that yet.  I'm HOPING that PART of the problem is the fact that my Colt DS needs to be timed, but more than likely it's only a small part of the problem.

I'll see if a 442 that I'm getting doesn't do any better in my hands.  But eventually I'd like to get a bigger revolver in .38 and or .22 to practice double action shooting more.  I've also been decocking my M9 a lot more at the range to practice DA shots.
