How long a wait for the Redhawk nowadays and how much did they get ya for it, if you don't mind me asking? They seem pricey used cause the new ones are so slow in production. I got impatient and bought a new, and new out this year S&W Model 69, 5 shot. I found out first time out it had a cylinder you couldn't get a round in. Smith promptly fixed it with a new cylinder. This gun has a 4. something barrel with a half lug under the barrel. I loved shooting .44 specials in it. .44 Magnums in that light weight short barrel are rather punishing for an old man. Some young guys might like it. I didn't have any trouble selling it. I have a Ruger Redhawk 5.5" barrel, 6 shot on order at my LGS. I hear horror stories about Taurus, but have only owned 2. They worked fine. Like is being said, I would hold out for an older Smith or Ruger, but I would go for a longer barrel. Thanks, Mark How long a wait for the Redhawk nowadays and how much did they get ya for it, if you don't mind me asking? They seem pricey used cause the new ones are so slow in production. Or did Ruger finally get the new production line up and running? I've always wanted a 5.5 stainless! I got tired of waiting on the Redhawk after about 6 weeks. I had him change the order to a Smith & Wesson Model 629, .44 mag. As to price, I cannot remember on the Ruger, but it was cheaper than the Smith. I think the Smith is going to be either $700 plus, or $800, plus. It has been so long I dont remember for sure. Thanks, Mark |

Thanks, Mark View Quote Last year I bought a NIB 629 4" at a great price (for California). I had wanted a 4" Redhawk and thought I'd missed the 4" 44 boat when Ruger shut down production. The 629 is a great gun, and I should have been happy. BUT: The gun kept coming loose after a few boxes of ammo. I'm not sure who assembled it, but I ended up having to retighten every screw in the gun. After using loc-tite and nail polish on the various parts, its fine now. Great trigger pull, accurate, nice heft but not too heavy, and the factory grips are perfect for me. BUT again, I still wanted that Redhawk 4" When Ruger started to offer them up again, I ordered one. My intention was to keep it and sell the S&W off. When I got the Redhawk, I think I messed up. It's heavy, the trigger pull was the worst thing I've ever felt, and the grips just plain sucked. I ordered factory wood grips and dropped in a Wolff 14lb spring. Well, the gun is starting to grow on me. So now I have two 4" 44's and don't plan to sell either one. I have a lot more rounds down range with the Smith. But the Ruger will soon catch up. The Smith is more refined, better looking and easier to carry. The Ruger is a tank and should handle any 44 reload I can roll up. I'll have to get a good field holster for the Ruger and will probably use it as a woods gun. Both guns ended up running me the same amount if you add in the Ruger grips and spring kit. The Smith has a better holster selection and a better trigger. I think the Smith is a better overall deal, but don't think you can go wrong with either one. |

I have been looking at a slightly used Model 29 mountain gun talk talo edition. I am just wondering what they are worth so I don't pay to much. The only thing that I see missing is the factory rubber grip. It does have the nice wood grips. Thank you for any help.

I considered that a steal in today's market, a 629 I've got to believe should be at least $750. |

The one I was looking at is sitting at $850 plus $45 shipping. I just don't know if I want to spend that much or just hold out for a 4" M29.

A nice prelock 629 will set you back at least $650-$700 In todays market; nice revolvers have been appreciating a lot as of late. |

This one has the lock and I thought it was a little high. I tried to type talo edition but the auto correct on my phone sucks.

I gotta agree, Taurus quality is spotty at best and the resale value is crap city. I wouldn't buy a used Taurus either because A. The crappy resale value B. You are likely buying something that the last buyer found was junk. That's not to say there aren't some good Taurus revolvers out there but it's a crap shoot finding one. For the money, especially if you plan to shoot hot ammo, you just can't beat a Ruger at all. I own several Ruger revolvers and they are bad@ss tanks that are almost indestructible. I LOVE Ruger revolvers. Now, onto S&W, they are excellent guns and the standard model 29's and 629's are a great choice also. They aren't quite as strong as the Ruger's but unless you are going to feed your gun a steady diet of heavy loads it's not an issue. If, you can swing the extra cost, S&W's Performance Center revolvers are the cream of the crop. I'm a dyed in the wool Ruger girl but my favorite revolver is my S&W 629 V-Comp. The Performance Center turns great guns into amazing guns. My V-Comp is insanely accurate, trigger is fantastic and the gun is just gorgeous. I gotta say starting out with a .44 magnum as your first revolver is a pretty bold move. It's not a killer but it's turned more than one first timer off from powerful revolvers, myself included. The first time I shot a .44 magnum it was a Redhawk and I had never shot a magnum in my life, one shot and I wanted nothing to do with a .44mag ever again. It took a good twenty years before I shot another and that wasn't until I had a fair bit of .357 mag time in. It's not a deal killer but just remember it's going to kick like a beast and it'll take a few shots to get used to it. The worst thing you can do is jump in too fast and develop a flinch that will really mess with all your shooting. If you have a fair bit of experience with recoil it won't be a problem. This is my baby, a S&W 629 V-Comp Performance Center .44 magnum with a Trijicon RMR red dot. By far, the sweetest revolver I've ever shot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v660/Brandiwynter/IMG_0181_zps54260412.jpg View Quote I'm a little late to the conversation, but Smith's Performance Center revolvers are first class wheel guns, for sure. There is NOTHING else like them. They ain't cheap, but buy once-cry once. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on one of their JM 625's. A good friend of mine flat out refuses to sell me his, so I gotta do, what I gotta do :) |

I own a Ruger RedHawk, my only 44 magnum. Before I'd spend anything on a taurus I'd think hard about saving up for a ruger redhawk or super redhawk, or a S&W, perhaps the new model 69. |

Is that you The funny part of that question.... I actually went to school with Greg Keith, Elmers grandson and as kids we took horse riding lessons at Elmers son's house, Ted Keith. They lived just down the road. There was often an old gent around, but I was too young to know who Greg's grandad was. He passed away in the nursing home a few miles down the road, off of ustick road. I guess it's in my Idaho heritage to become a .44 fanatic. I worked on an outfitter and guide ranch in the wilderness area on the salmon river after getting out of the army. The old head guide Bob Cole knew Keith as well. I've been carrying a .44 mag since a teenager. It's an extremely versatile cartridge for a reloader and outdoorsman. Here's a picture of mine that John Taffin used in his gun digest book of the .44. Grips are Ropers from Herretts, which is another Idaho company. Gotta love pics! |

If you're a new revolver shooter, you might want to start with a .357. .44 mag. is a great caliber, but I started out (years ago) with a S&W 686 and moved to the .44 mag from there.
I recently bought a S&W 625 Performance Center revolver and it's the most enjoyable wheel gun I've ever owned. It was close to $1,000.00 out the door, but worth the price. I'd stay away from Taurus, personally. Look for a good, used Smith or Ruger GP 100. You won't be sorry. |
