Have you handled the regular El Patron next to the new "Grizzly Paw" w/1860 grips?

Curious if it's a noticeable difference. The 1873 peacemaker grips on my El Patron feel alright, but I got grizzly paws too and wouldn't mind a little more purchase.

Found a cheap pair of wood grips for my Colt SAA a while ago; but finally re-stained them to a darker shade, as I wanted to (the ones on the handgun).

I've been mulling lately about why these weren't more popular than Colts.  Because you'd think it would be waaaay faster to reload.  But maybe it was the balance and pointability of a Colt?

Very nice have blue.  You know how to do range time.  LOL.

From what I've read and heard, the Colt SAA was the predominant revolver for the military at the time but the Army did buy the Schofield because it could be reloaded on horseback easier with one hand. The problem was the 45 Colt cartridge was by far more commonly found ammunition and the Schofield was promised to be chambered for it but the design of the time couldn't accommodate the longer cartridge and was delivered in the shorter 45 Schofield chambering. Soldiers that were issued the Schofield often found resupply of the Schofield ammunition in short supply while the guys issued the Colt revolvers often had no problem gettign ammo for theirs and I believe they could even use the Schofield ammo if available. A soldier has little use for a firearm that he can't get ammo for so they fell by the wayside.

George Schofield designed the improvements to the S&W #3.  George Schofield's brother was John Schofield, former Sec. of War, commander of the Dept. of the Missouri  and the Pacific He was later commander of the US army.  I am sure family connections helped screw up the supply chain.

Just when I thought I had all the single actions I needed, the 32-20 bug bit me. I was OK for a couple of weeks until I discovered that Dixie Gun Works had their 5 1/2" Uberti 32-20's on sale for $450. That was all it took. The pistol arrived, then the dies, brass and bullets, and a new bullet mould will come later.

I rarely shoot at paper much preferring steel at 50 and 75 yds. But I set up a 25 yd. target and shot at it leaning back against the wall of my shop. Like my other Uberti's, this one is quite accurate (except for the LAST shot!!).

That trigger so far forward in the trigger guard makes you think it’s some kind of double action.

I am thinking of doing the same (well, the grip part anyway) on mine...

I started a thread with questions on this, but figured I'd throw it in here too...

Always wanted a "cowboy" gun, saw this at the local pawn shop a few months ago, and thought it was cool. Stopped in Tuesday after a haircut, and it was still there. Took a look at it and thought it seemed well made, well finished, and worked great, so I said the hell with it...$399 out the door, which may not be a steal, bit I thought was pretty good.

The grips aren't bad, but have a few dings in the finish, and I prefer a less glossy look, so I was debating pulling them, stripping them, and refinishing them, like you, with a BLO finish, something low gloss. I assume I just take out the three screws (two at the top, one in the bottom) out of the backstrap, and remove it to get the grips off?

I also though it was odd how the hammer was unfinished on the sides...is there a reason for this? I like the way your hammer turned out...how did you do that? Did you do that yourself? How hard is it to dismount the hammer? I've taken down Nagant revolvers, and Webleys...but never a SAA...

My first SAA type pistol, and I REALLY like it....in .45 Colt too.

I’ve never really looked at a birds head, but it looks like the same 3 screws

i blued my hammer with brownells oxpho-blue

the guns are really simple inside, probably a youtube video can show you how
...better than i can explain on an iphone

citri-strip from the hardware store, light sanding
maybe some dark walnut stain, and tung or boiled linseed oil

same oil used on a Garand rifle

looks like a good deal
if you decide to do the work, post some pics

Well, I pulled the grip, stripped it, dyed it with RIT dye, and rubbed 4 coats of BLO into it....came out great in my eyes.

I use RIT dye, the powdered type, put it in a coffee filter, pour alcohol through it...this is a mix of dark brown and scarlet...you can custom mix your colors, and to me, dye penetrates and stains much better than stain...

I learned this while learning to refinish AK furniture...I could custom mix my colors, iodine orange, Russian red, get it to whatever shade I wanted, and then I would hit it with mist coats of spray semi-gloss poly...I could make AK furniture come out damn near spot on to actual Russian shellac finish, but much more durable...

Anyway, here she is with the re-done grip...haven't decided to tackle the hammer just yet...
