When I got out of the Army I worked on an outfitter and guide ranch in the Frank Church, off of the Middle Fork of the Salmon. The head wrangler was an old cowboy who had lived in Challis and knew Keith well. I packed a stainless 5.5" Super Blackhawk .44 back then. It was my only centerfire handgun. Packing the old .44 and my only centerfire rifle, a Browning .270. Life was pretty simple. Now I open the safe and stare for 20 minutes trying to decide...

I just recently acquired this Pietta 1858 from a family member.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us I have a few questions about it 1st - It needs a front site. Any suggestions where to get one? 2nd - Do the cartridge conversions available for these guns allow the use of smokeless powder .45 Colt loads? 3rd - And this one is really the one i am most curious about, does all of Pietta's 1858's feel like the hammer spring is about in the 35 pound range??? This thing is so dang tough to cock, that my wife can't cock it with one finger. |

I just expanded my Single Action family today. I put an order in for a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 Carbine. I had one years ago and traded it away, so it's time to replace it now that I'm on a SA kick.
The Dillon 550B has been cranking out .30 Carbine for the past two nights prepping for it. The one I had before was one of the most accurate handguns I've ever owned. I hope this one lives up to that standard. I have a few thousand cast bullets, both gas check and bevel base that I'm going to try with it. My QH M1 Carbine likes the gas check Lyman bullets. Pics to come. I hope to have it on Friday. |

There are collectors for these, but I am not aware of any big bump in value because of it. I have one just like yours.

Finally got my first SAA...clone.
Uberti Cattleman Hombre 45LC, 4.75" I absolutely love the finish. Wanted a SAA that looked like a workingman's gun, not a show piece. Will be buying another Hombre soon and planning on attending CAS this Spring. Thanks for the inspiration. I haven't been this excited about a handgun purchase since my first Glock in 1992! 
SO glad I went 45. Debated for quite some time...but having seen SAA in 38/357, that small barrel opening just didn't look right...

I think they just renamed it to the "Hombre" now. It has the same bead blasted matte blue finish, as cast gripframe and lack of final finishing. The action definately needs some smoothing out to be what a standard Uberti is. But, I like the more durable matte finish compared to the CCH finish that rusts easily and the wide rear sight notch with the squared front sight blade is a huge improvement over the more traditional and correct sights. I'm going to spend what will probably be several hours polishing the gripframe and fitting the grips better than they are, and I will definately smooth out the action. But for the price of these models, they are a steal. The more I shoot it the more I like mine. |

Lipsey's Ruger .45 Flattop Blackhawk
.45Colt/.45ACP. Built on a .357 frame. This was shot with .230 grain .45 ACP Blazer Ball @ 20 yards (supported/ resting over my pack): 
Note the base pin working its way out. This is a brand new gun and it was doing that with regularity. I made a call to Ruger today and they are sending out a new heavier spring and latch. I have had that happen on heavy recoiling single actions, but not on light ones. I ended up hand fitting a Belt Mountain oversized base pin on my Bisley .44, but I would not haveexpected it on a light recoiling .45 acp gun. We will see what happens. The new little pea shooter seems like an accurate one. |
