Did/Does Ruger make them in this caliber?

Made.

Not in current regular production.

Occasionally you can find them used, but the only ones I have seen were
Lipsey's exclusives in blue and stainless, 3" & 4-5/8", 500 of each.

Of course the 44 Mag. will shoot 44 Special and those are fairly common.

"Lipsey" (autocorrect got me).

The only years I've heard someone refer to directly were 2010-11.

I can't remember seeing one for sale recently and I'm always looking for 44-40 Rugers which, coincidentally had a one year run as well (1995).

There are always a lot of Colt SAAs available in 44 Special, and, of course, they cost a lot more.

How strong are the Colt SAA? Will they stand up to competition use?

I have two of the Ruger NV's in .44 special. My 4-5/8" stainless one is a Lipsey's (One of around 500 made in that configuration) that was made in 2010. My 3-3/4" stainless one was made sometime after 2014 according to the serial number. I am told this may have been a recent run by Ruger when they were doing some house cleaning with left over parts.....

This is the current offering by Ruger in .44 magnum. It is stamped "New Vaquero", but uses the original (Larger) Vaquero frame

What kind of competition?

Assuming cowboy action, a lot of people are using Colts but they're more expensive (like 3x) and hard to find.  Ruger pretty much owns cowboy action...and most are shooting (super) light .357 loads.

My local club is looking to start CAS, and I have a rifle in 44mag/44spec. I gotta ask why are people using light 357's? And not 45LC?

A lot of people use the light .357's and .38's because it's cheaper than using .45 Colts and also for the lighter recoil. The "Gamer's" use the .38's for speed. The lighter recoil allows them to go faster.

I started out with .44 magnum guns, but used .44 special ammo. My rifle, a Winchester Model 94, didn't work too well with the .44 specials, so I ended up switching to a .45 Colt rifle (Uberti copy of the 1860 Henry) and  Ruger Vaquero handguns in .45 Colt.

Mic214 pretty much answered it:  very light loads in .357 cases for less recoil in the pistols and so the cases (versus 38 Spcials) will feed in the rifles.  Same for 44 Magnum versus 44 Special plus the pistols, especially the first original/"Old" Vaqueros are built on a larger frame which CAS guys generally don't prefer, hence Ruger started making the New Vaqueros which had smaller, closer to Colt SAA-sized frames.

Ruger even has a SASS model Vaquero which are sold in pairs.

My favorite revolver is my "Sheriff" model in .44 Special. Sweet shooting gun.

Had my photographer buddy take this photo.
