THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I know there are solutions in .380, which I dont think I'd feel comfortable with, and I know there's the .38 special revolvers, but ultimately, I wanted to stick with 9mm because with handguns I want a single round. So the search was on for a while. I've tried the Kahr handguns...they are ok but they feel cheap. A good friend of mine carrys a Kahr MK9, and it's had problems. I also dont like the way it felt in my hands, the same problem I have will all Kahr handguns. I looked into the Ruger LC9, but I didnt like the way that handgun felt either. Didnt want a Kel Tec at all. Wasent impressed with the Sig 290. Then I found the Kimber Solo. First thing I noticed is that it feels solid, not cheap. It helps that the whole things is built on an aluminum frame. For a weapon of it's size, it points naturally and it fits in my hand very well. The trigger pull is very smooth. It's DAO, so it's a bit heavy, but it's smooth and feels nice, while all the other offerings felt rather gritty and inconsistent. It's also very, very small, smaller I think that the LC9, the same size as Kahr's offerings. It has very good sights for a weapon of it's size. I did a lot of research on it, and the reactions are mixed. There are reports of this gun running flawlessly, and reports of the gun having problems. But fuck it, in my opinion it's a lot better than anything else I've looked at, so I still wanted one. If I got a bad one, I'd live. So naturally, I lusted after it. Save up some money. A couple of days ago, I got a promotion and a raise, so I decided that finally it was time to treat myself. These things are damned hard to find, so I thought I was going to have to wait a while, but on a whim I decided to check out my local gun shop (Reds in Austin). Reds usually rapes in handgun prices, but to my surprise they had one left, and they were selling it for 679. Since the gun is going on Gunbroker well over the 780 range in auctions, I told them I'll take it.
Tomorrow I'll take her to the range and I'll report back. Recommended break in period is 24 rounds of nothing that weighs less than 124gr. I have 150 rounds of 124gr Winchester NATO rounds that I'm going to pump through her and see what she does. We'll see then if I got one of the good ones or one of the problematic ones. |

Took her to the range today, I put 130 rounds down.
Had a FTE around round 40ish. It may have been me, this gun kicks hard and requires a strong grip. No more failures occured with the rest of the trip. Also, occasionally the slide will not lock to battery after all the ammo is expended. This cropped up about midway through the range session, and towards the end it went away. Hmm. Some notes: The gun is impressively accurate for a weapon of its size. I feel that this has a lot to do with its excellent sights, good ergonomics, and very smooth trigger. I mentioned earlier that this gun is DAO, it's actually SAO. Which is why it requires a saftey. The saftey is ambidextrious, flipps down 1911 style, and is easy enough to switch on and off. No really though, this gun has a great trigger for the kind of gun it is. Here's my first group with it:
From 10 yards away. Gun is as accurate as I am. I have a few better groups, but I forgot to take pictures of them. What kept my groups from being tighter was that dang, this gun is not a range toy. Recoil is very strong. I got better groupings once I increased the strength of my grip. This gun is not real fun to shoot a few magazines through. Definitely all business. Also, the grip is a bit too slippery for my tastes. I ran Winchester NATO and Winchester PDX1 124 +P. The _+P rounds were definitely felt. Gun sometimes felt like it could fly out of my hands if I'm not careful. First order of business is for me to acquire some grip tape and wrap the area just under the trigger guard. This gun is definitely stiff. You can tell that the tolerances are quite tight on it. The slide takes a strong grip and firm pull to charge. The magazine release is very stiff and a bit difficult to engage. It is ambidextrous, I found that dropping the mag by using my index finger to work out better for me than using my thumb. All in all I'm very happy with this gun. The one FTE was right around the break in period, and everything after that worked fine. The weapon is very accurate for its size and is easy to put on target. The fact that the slide would not lock back midway through is a bit concerning and I would like to explore it further with a future trial session, after my hand gets some rest. For now, it's not a huge concern, because this is not the kind of weapon that I would want to get into a reloading, extended gunfight in anyways..besides I dont even have a spare mag for it. |

Welp, I'm sending this gun back to Kimber to fix the slide not locking back issue. I'll let you guys know in 3 to 5 weeks how it goes when I get my gun back...

If you guys don't mind, I'll jump in on this one. I just picked up a Solo Carry this week. Finally got around to breaking it in last night. I fired 50 rounds of Aguilla 124gr FMJ. I did have two FTE's in the first 20 rounds, then after that it ran like a champ. Recoil was sharp, but I could deal with it. One box was all I'd want to shoot at a time. Accuracy was pretty darn good. I didn't have any problems staying inside the 8 ring of a B-27 target at 21 feet. That was shooting pretty fast. Anyway, I placed an order for two mags from Kimber and they already charged my card. I'm hoping they ship shortly.
Overall, I'm really happy. 9mm power in the same size as my Colt Mustang Pocketlite. ETA - Kimber shipped the mags the day after the order and they should be at the house today. |

I got the gun back from Kimber last week, I took it to the range on Friday to see if they fixed it.
They did. The handgun runs flawlessly now. I had a single FTE, but I'm pretty sure that was due to a limp wrist. I was a little worried as I've heard some horror stories with Kimber, but they did take care of me and I cannot complain, especially for a first generation product. Originally Posted By madarcher427:

Iam looking at this one & the lc9 as well as the new nano . They recommend ammo that is 124 grain and above. In my experience, +P ammo is not needed. I load it with Winchester Ranger 147 JHP rounds, and they have fed through the gun well enough for me to be confident in their reliability. However, if you use 115 grain rounds, that's where the problems are going to go. |

A seven round magazine, and tritium sights would make the SOLO my next purchase.

I bought my Kimber Solo Saturday, Ran about 50 rds out of it without any problems. After I shot 20-25 rds of the 124gr, I shot some target loads and they ran fine.
Yes, this pistol bucks a bit... I laugh/smile after each shot. Bri |

I held one of these (Solo Carry) in a semi-local (90 minutes away) shop the other day and almost bought it, $699 NIB.
I'd seen a few threads here with various issues/complaints, and it made me think twice and walk away... now I'm regretting it. |

I was in the same boat as you (OP).
I was kind of leaning towards a Khar, but, Crimson Trace makes lasergrips for the SOLO, and, in my opinion, the Crimson Trace Lasergrips are outstanding in low light conditions, especially with a little gun. I've read a ton of reviews, and it seems that Kimber has ironed out the problems of the earlier SOLOS. I searched for a Solo, to at least fondle, but, couldn't find any. I decided to take a chance that I would like it, and bid on a couple of CDP models that were on Gunbroker (The CDP models come with night sights, Crimson Trace, and front strap checkering). The MSRP on the SOLO is $725, and on the CDP model it is about $1,200. Every CDP I bid on was bought by somebody else for $1,700! I just happened to be driving past a gun shop that I don't go in to very often, and stopped in. I looked in the gun case, and there sat a standard, SOLO. I asked if I could fondle it, TRYING to hide my excitement, and I loved the way it felt! I asked "how much?", and when he said $659, I handed it back, and said, write it up! Now , I just need to find some extra mags, and a Crimson Trace lasergrip. |

I picked up my new Solo today, gave it some FP-10, and shot it until my fingers got numb from the cold, and my palm was getting sore. I didn't count how many rounds I put through it, but, as a test, I also ran some Federal, 115 grain fmj, and some of my IDPA loads with 125 grain jhp, with 4.2 grains of VV320 behind them.
It shot about 2" low, at 10 yards, and as far as accuracy goes, it didn't really like the 115 fmjs, but, it gobbled everything, without a hitch! The Solo is a keeper! |

The 8 round mags are available from Kimber. I received 3 of them last week.
I'm not real impressed with the way the extension fits up to the bottom of the frame. Pretty crappy, compared to any other brand I've seen. |
