There's a longer more detailed version of this up at the blog. The meat of the post is this: I got a 1917 Colt catalog. I scanned the whole freakin' thing and put it up on Flickr. It also has a price list. $39.50 got you a Government Model with Ivory grips and lots of engraving. Alas, I didn't get any actual Colt pistols, just the catalog.

Anyhow, enjoy.

Thanks for posting. I love how the catalog informs the would-be consumer that the slide stop is a slide release:

"In this model the slide remains open after firing the last cartridge. When reloading the arm in this position, insert the magazine, then press downward the slide stop (to the rear of the trigger as illustrated). The slide goes forward, inserting a cartridge without any movement of the slide by hand.

It wasn't a controversial method of operation. Hell, it was a selling point.

According the the inflation calculator I found on line, $39.50 in 1917 is equal to $700.00 today.

I just saw a 1918 model year 22 target like that at a show over the weekend. I think the guy wanted $800. I bought a Ruger 22/45 instead, and of course, now wished I'd have gotten the Colt. But it was still a decent financial decision, right, responsible and all that... right?

here's mine.  Shipped Jan 4, 1918 to "Commanding Officer, Springfield Armory".  It's had a little work since then.

1918, baby!

WW1 Colt 1911. Saw action in France. Then came home and pulled guard duty for another 60 years.
