Wow , I am in to see what it goes for and what the folks in the know thinks it is worth.

Collectors in general don't like restored or refinished guns so much and they are the guys who drive most anything better than a shooter . This however is a quite rare piece so who knows ?

The demise of Colt (deferred by the new military contract but still pretty much a given ) will only drive Colt collectables even though most of the collectable stuff really has little connection to the present company except for the name

Based on the values in the OP I would think it's probably in the 15k-20k range. More desirable than a well worn original but less than a lightly used original. The quality restoration shouldn't kill the value like an amateur job. Just my moderately educated guess on a subject I can't afford to have much experience on

I saw one of those in a gun store up near Arlington almost 40 years ago.  Thought it was a funny looking 1911 till I read up on it.

I don't remember the price back then, but I couldn't afford it.  A year or so later I bought a 1911 in really nice shape for $195.  Mine was made in 1917 and it's not really rare, like that one.

Nice gun.  Will it get shot?  Or just oiled up and put away to look at now and then?

If a five percent finish gun would be say 10 k the turnbull rests should be valued roughly the same prettier but not more valuable

If he doesn't need the money right now he could probably put it out there and wait for those collectors who need to have it and will pay the higher estimation.

Is that the mag release on the bottom of the grip?

Yes, that's the mag release sticking out the bottom.  No need/hurry to sell. When he brought it in to show the "shop regulars" the conversation on value started and everyone present had an opinion that was different.

Since it has been refinished.... I'd shoot it in a match or two and carry every now and then.

I've always been told, with a gun so rare, there really is no 'value' per se. There is only how much someone is willing to pay when the gun is for sale. And that could be A LOT.

If I'm not mistaken, that's the type of .45 mentioned in a Gun Digest article from 1983. The authors father had acquired that 1911 from a case he investigated where the wife blew her husband away, back then detectives would build up large collections when nobody would claim the firearm back after the case was closed. He inherited it from his father and carried it in the Second World War. Great story.

Except it isn't a 1911 but a Colt Model 1905.

Yup, the article was titled, THE .45 if I remember.

I figure its worth 0-5% finish + 60% Turnbull's cost + speculation.

You knew going into it that refinishing it takes it off the table for a serious collector. But now you can shoot it, enjoy it, etc.

I thought it was a contest that I was going to post a picture of a factory Colt ACE II complete pistol in case but I suppose you win with this one.

going to have to take it to an auction to determine the true value.  Auction it near Trumbull and pay for him to come out and deliver a speech on how awesome he made it.

collectors in all fields seem to be much more open towards quality restorations than they were 20-30 years ago so who knows about the value.

I doubt its restoration will take that beauty off any collector's table.

Passed on a fairly worn one years back at a gunstore down in the Hill Country for something like $700.

I now see I should have purchased it

I saw a YouTube video of colts and that one has the barrel cammed on 2 pins. Some had sight safeties or none at all.
