I want to give my son a 1911, he loves everything Colt.  I was thinking of buying a Springfield or another 1911 but I just haven't been impressed.

It's going to be a one time thing so I don't really mind spending money but are 1911s really going for 1k now?

I've been out of the 1911 game for a whole we just would buy 70 series gov models and work on them, but they were cheap back then not now...

Are there any other  US made mil spec looking 1911s?

The Remington's just look off to me

That one.

I like the blued finish.

It will mature and age as he does.

When his kids get it, they will know that it has been their Dad's companion that Grandad gave him.

The Colt Commander O4691 can be had for about $950 also.  Doesn't do anything better than the full size gun except conceal a little easier.

This sounds like a good "do it right, once" purchase, so I'd consider the Commander as well.

The new Colts are SOLID.  Very well executed and RELIABLE.    The best guns they have made in 40 years.

Yes...Tombstone Tactical is good to go as well; bought several guns from them.

If you want something 70 series; probably will end up over $1K with shipping:

Buy him one of the Commanders.

The rat tail commander costs about 800.

The stainless commander is 950, that's the gun my wife gave me as a wedding present a few years back.

If I were you Id look for a new 1991 government model from Colt.  You can find them around 800-900 all the time, but I am a biased Colt fanboy.

On a side note I just got back my Colt series 70 reproduction that I sent off to Colt for the Royal Blue treatment.

Sorry for the quality, my cell camera is a joke.

Even with a low quality photo, that color looks amazing.  I have a S70 I want to send them to get the Royal Blue.  How long did it take them to send your gun back to you?

It took over a year, but part of that was my fault.  I sent it off right before the panic.  Asked for Royal Blue, got it back and it was 2 toned blued with the rounds a matt bluing, I guess I didnt specify I wanted it all over.  They took it back, got sent back and they missed the hammer, but they took it back and made it right.  The 3rd time the rear sight corner was broken off, because it looked like someone at FEDEX through it off a building, and Colt took it back and made it right.

They were pretty behind and it took longer than I thought, but they made it right and did a great job. If you decide to do it you can contact BJT72 at 1911forum.com  He is Colt's head of the custom shop and a great guy.  His first name is Brent and for the life of me I cant remember his last name.  He was a pleasure to work with.

It really shines outside in the sunlight.

Get something with sights he can see, not GI sights.  Save some more for  something useful.

Jeff Cooper said you needed sights you can see,  a good trigger, and a dehorning job.

I have a couple of 2012-2013 O1991s and I love 'em.

I really think they're the best base model gun out of the box.  The sights are good, I like the aluminum trigger and everything on 'em is good to go if you live with the plastic MSH.

If you're on a budget and still want nice guns, this store on Gunbroker is the way to go. I've bought five Colts from him in the past three years, and every transaction has been flawless. Not affiliated with the dude in any way, but his name is Garry Lee and he's good to deal with. His prices are a little on the high side of retail, but the convenience of being able to pay off over time is worth it to me, plus it doesn't register on the radar like a lump sum thousand dollar purchase.

I have 2 older Colts and a new Railgun
The older ones were purchased used for $550 & $600 both "used" were like new in boxes .

Depends how big of a hurry you are in , but watch Armslist and other local boards , put the word out in your local shooter clubs , let people know your looking

This.  I can't believe nobody else mentioned it. For about the same price you can have all the fancy fixins!

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/catalog/product/view/id/15185/category/2693/

Not sure if they are still offering free shipping. If I had another slot in a pistol rack I'd have already scooped one up.
