I have a P38 acquired from a neighbor. After racking the slide, with the hammer cocked & safety off, the first trigger pull goes all the way to the back, ostensibly without doing anything.

The second trigger pull fires the gun and it functions flawlessly thereafter.

If the hammer is down, the DA action works fine.

Any thoughts on the cause of this? Googling didn't help much.

Thanks!

Check the Walther forums - specifically the classics section. I've owned several P38s and P1s and have not encountered the condition you describe.

Field strip and remove the grips.

Give the action a good cleaning to remove old grease and gunk.
Pay attention to the sear and the draw bar assembly on the right side of the frame.

Sounds like the draw bar may be gunked up and not engaging the sear on the first try.

Also check the draw bar spring and make sure it's present, properly engaged and not broken or weak.

Here's a schematic for a WWII version, same general parts as a Post-war.

Draw bar spring is part "R".
Notice how the draw bar end engages the "teeth" in the sear on the right side.  If the bar is sticky or the spring is defective/missing the draw bar "hook" may not be engaging the sear on the first pull.
