Reading the NRA Rifleman accuracy test of the new S&W M&P45 Shield, I got to wondering:

Has anybody ever done a comparison of handgun accuracy comparing factory open sights to laser sights (such as the Crimson Trace lasers that attach to the accessory rail, trigger guard or grip)?

I am sure the result would depend upon the area lighting, whether or not a rest was used, and the visual acuity of the shooter, but I don't recall ever having seen a comparison test.

Anybody got a link to such a comparison?

Thanks.

It's not even a contest.

American Rifleman did a thing several years ago on the S&W 642 with CT grips. It kept 1.5" groups at 20 feet or something like that.

Lasers take away the sight radius limitations of handguns. Wherever that dot is when the hammer falls, that's where the bullet is going.

Same reason why an RDS can help produce really tight groups from even novice shooters.

Thanks, folks.

That is what I have experienced personally.

I am glad to see that my experience is typical.
