I'm looking to lay in a supply of 45 ACP bulk ammo to get acquainted with my new to me Colt MKIV gov model. Ammo salad days are upon us so, any reccomendations?

I'm looking for full power FMJ military ammo, NOT watered down might be used in great grandpa's shot out rattletrap Spanish copy pistol ammo.

Who still makes the good stuff?

Yep.

I've been throwing down a case or two of S&B every time it's on sale.

I have a fair amount Blazer brass as well.

And HST (of course).

I like S&B. Blazer was great until they started that small pistol primer nonsense.

Has there been problems with small pistol primers?

I shoot Blazer Brass with the small pistol primer almost exclusively in my G21. I shoot it during weekly bowling pin matches and sometimes at my monthly USPSA match if I shoot the G21.

I'm on my 4th 1,000 round case and I have not had one malfunction from either the gun or the ammo.

SGAmmo dot com for anything that has gunpowder in it.

They're selling 1000 rounds of S&B .45 ammo for 235 bucks plus shipping.

Brownells has S&B 45 acp for $ .25 a round shipped after coupon. I just ordered 550 rds for $138 shipped. Best deal going right now on quality 45 acp.  I like S&B 45, it's very clean and a full power accurate load.

S&B 45 acp

No problem functioning that I'm aware of.  Just a pain in the butt for reloaders.

Yep^

My method is to go to SGAmmo.com > Select Caliber > Filter by Price > pick first 1000 round case meeting desired specifications.

For brass cased 230gr Ball, this would be the winner

I have used a lot of S&B ammo and it's good stuff.

I always liked CCI/Speet...I bought 500 rounds of 230 grain lawmen and was pissed as hell to find out it had a small primer pocket.

Not a pain for the reloaders. It is a pain if you're planning on shooting them from a revolver, factory new or reloading "new."

Magtech/CBC 230gr FMJ works great. I shot tighter groups with it in my MC Operator (2011 purchase) over an old box of Federal HST at 10yds. Compared to WWB, much cleaner burning, slightly more power, more accurate and more consistent as well.

If you want hot 230 grain find IMI. Other than that I have ran a lot of Blazer both aluminum and brass with zero issues.

All 230 grain ball is very similar in performance so pretty much what ever you get the best price on they all shoot pretty much the same unless you are trying to shoot tight groups at 50 yards.
I recently got a 500 case of fiocchi for 135. I figure 45 ball for 3 bucks a box more than 9mm can't be beat. Runs my 1911 great ( then again any 1911 that won't run any brand of 230 grain ball has a problem)
Until I got the fiocchi deal my go to was the federal aluminum 100 round wal mart packs which worked fine and ran around 30 bucks
