I have been buying 115 gr (SGAMMO) for about $199/$209 per 1k rds.  A friend asked me what do I recommend for defense carry, I have no idea.  Figured I would use what I practice with and have on hand.  I also have some 124 gr. and 147 gr.  I told him I find it online for about .21/.22 per rd, incl. shipping.  And that Perfecta from Walmart cannot be beaten for paper.

What can I recommend to him and the most you will pay for defense rounds?  I told him to find some hollow points and they likely would be about .50/per rd.   On SGAMMO, the defense hollow point went well over .50/per rd. with shipping. I am still learning, myself, so cannot really help him.  But I know arfcom can.  So, what do I recommend to him?  Thanks in advance!

I use Federal 124gr HST for the higher end and Remington 115 gr. JHP for the lower end. They both shoot good and work in every 9mm I've seen them used in.

HST or Critical Defense for carry ammo.

Magtech for cheap plinking.

Buy it on sale.

If I buy ahead of time, I look for deals. If I need a box quickly for any reason, I go to a LGS that has them and pay what they want for them.

For defense ammo I run Gold Dots in 9mm, and have run the HSTs as well. Both in 124g standard pressure if I can find it.

For training I run a MagTech HP to simulate recoil of defense rounds on a budget. Im not sure how they expand/penetrate, but for my training purposes they work well.

If you buy good HP's locally you'll probably get raped and pay $1/Rd+. Shannon currently has 147gr HSTs, 124gr +p HSTs and Gold dots all for $25-26/box of 50. That's pretty close to the best price you're going to find, so just tack 2-4 boxes on to your next order for target ammo.
Then sell it to him for $30/50rd box.

Agree.  I would not go cheap over safety.  I was just curious as to the average PPR of defense ammo that people look for because round price has been drilled into my head by a shooting friend for my practice 9mm and .22LR.  I have no experience with this ammo.  But will start adding it to my stockpile soon and can advise the person who asked me.

If I need it, I'll pay what I have to in order to get good ammo for carry.  That said, I currently pay 44 CPR for Winchester RA9T.

I bought a case each of Speer GD in 124gr +p, and 135gr 38 short barrel about 10 years ago, and sealed them in cans. I don't worry about it so much now.

Favorite carry ammo is Federal HST 147gr standard pressure P9HST2.  I try to buy it when I see it under $0.50/round.  Up until recently, they were hard to find at any price..  I have a decent stash for both my Shield as well as my suppressed QC10 Colt SBR,, a little more than 1000 rounds.  I practice with AE9FP 147gr ball which has very similar velocity, felt recoil and POI.  Stocked up when Sam had them for $0.22/round.  You can still find it for $0.24/round.

The trick is to look for law enforcement packaging (50 rnd boxes) not the 20-25 rnd they sell in the local stores.  By buying the LE boxes you can find good SD ammo for $0.50 a rnd or a little more before shipping.

I reload all my target/range ammo.  For SD, I look for Speer Gold Dots/124gr.  If I can't find them, it's  Federal HST, or Hornady XTP.  I only shoot 115/124gr in 9mm.  I prefer Speer Gold Dots, it was our duty ammo, only in 45acp.
