I was just curious to see if anyone else has decided that one caliber is all they need for their handgun(s).
I went that route when I had .45's and when I decided to change calibers I went full in to 9mm.
Considering the handguns are for defensive use, if I need something more powerful I'll use a long gun.
It is so much easier to buy ammo and the guns are smaller and lighter and pack more ammo.
All three of my handguns are the same as well, one operating system, one type of mag and holsters, I think it helps us be more efficient shooters as well.
I know, I'm boring, but I'm a pragmatist so it's kinda the norm for me. But I have to admit, i have been ogling Browning Hi-Powers alot lately.

I'm pretty much that way. Of the 6 pistols I own, only one isn't a 9mm, and that's a Keltec P32 that I only keep like 100 rounds for.

.40 S&W is my family's single pistol caliber.

Why would you do that?

IMHO Variety is the spice of life.  Sure stack it deep on the one or two calibers your likely to turn to in a SHTF situation.  That said, there are far too many interesting guns and cartridges to collect, shoot, hunt with, and compete with to limit the number of cartridges you might own.

I started out 9mm only, and technically stayed pretty true to that, if you're referring to caliber as bullet dia rather than cartridge.
I'm mostly 9mm, but do have a couple .38s, and a .357.

And one .32ACP (Keltec P32).

And do .22lr's count?
I guess maybe not so much one caliber then.

I probably would have bought a Ruger LCR 9mm instead of my S&W 642 if they'd been out when I bought it, purely for the ammo commonality.

When primarily ordering ammo online it makes sense to have as few chamberings as possible, but it can be quite limiting.

In red, no it doesn't. I'm equally just as capable and efficient going from 1911's to HK's and to Sigs. What makes us better is repetition of skills meaning shooting.

Now I may make the drop to one caliber for most of my guns depending on if HK decides to make a VP45. I need to know what magazine design they will use before I drop my USP45 for a USP9 and a .45 1911 for a 9x19 1911.

I'll be always keeping 10mm, it has a point to being kept and in no way a 9x19 will do the same thing and no way am I lugging a long arm with me all the damn time when I am hiking or camping in the mountains. That is just retarded.

I went down to just 9mm. A lot easier to stack it deep when you only have one caliber to worry about. I miss some of my other calibers, but with the climate in CA, I just couldn't afford to stack it as deep as I feel is needed in multiple calibers.

9mm for auto, .45 colt for revolvers.

oh and a .22lr/mag in a single six

kinda want a .38 too

Yes, I'm fully invested in 9mm and I tend to stick to the same platform, just different models for different needs, i.e., G43, G26, G19, G17.

This tends to be easier on the wallet and regardless of what I'm carrying, should things go wrong for me, the wife or daughter can use my handgun because they are trained on the same platform.

Why does stacking deep for you carry/self-defense/zombie-apocalypse weapons preclude you from ALSO owning other handguns in other calibers you don't stack deep in.  This idea is silly on the face of it.  The two ides are not mutually exclusive!

For my carry and competition guns I have 40S&W, 45ACP and 38/357 stacked deep both in loaded ammo and reloading supplies.  For guns I only hunt with or have simply collected because I like them I don't feel and need to stack deep.  I only have a few boxes of 38/200 for my Webley and feel no need or some how less prepare for the zombies because I don't also stock up on 38/200.  Likewise for 10mm and 44 Mag.

Did you guys only date busty blonds and would not even consider dating petite redheads or leggy brunets.  Damn you guys must be boring.

Well, as I am married, dating would not be conducive to the well-being of my relationship with her.
I guess she could dye her hair and wear different things to simulate difference, but that would lead her to preclude I was not satisfied with who I married, which is also not conducive to the well-being of my relationship with her.

So one caliber, boring, I'm fine with that!

Majority of my stuff is 9mm, but I have a 1911(everybody has to have at least 1 ) and a pocket .380 I use as a backup/pocket gun.

I don't much see the point of .40 so that's out, but i wouldn't mind adding a plastic .45 to the stable to carry on occasion and blast at the range.

I have:

22LR

380 ACP

9x19mm

38 Short Colt

38 Special

357 Mag

38S&W

38/200

36 Cal Cap and Ball

40S&W

10mm Auto

45 ACP

The funny thing is the only semi auto's are in 22lr, 380ACP and 40S&W, the rest are all revolvers.

The carry gun is .45 ACP.
The ONE that really really matters.

All the rest are just for practice and shooting 'games.'

For the time being, for home defense and for carry, it is 9mm. My G19 and G43 fit the bill perfectly.

I do want a .40 for when the next ammo scare occurs. There will always be plenty of it around because LE uses it.

I may want to add a 10mm to the stable someday for "woods carry."

I have different calibers because there are different kind of people in my group/family!!!
Some can shoot any thing! Other can not! Not all of them are gun people!  So a diversity
in people! Means a diversity in firearms!!!

The above list, that mcb  posted! For me is only handguns! Long gun calibers are just as diverse!
I do agree with the OP in that if your going out the door, not coming back!
And your going by foot, Then you would have only one caliber hand gun, one caliber long gun!
Maybe a 22LR something?
Carrying much more is not sensible! IMHO!!!

Nope, I went to opposite ends of the spectrum. .380 auto for daily carry due to dress cloths. .45ACP for daily carry in casual cloths & HD pistol. I don't keep much .380 on hand, as I don't shoot it a lot. 45's I have I think a thousand rounds on hand, mix of FMJ and top shelf defensive ammunition.

When there's a "perfect" handgun caliber, I'll make it the one and only, until then, I'll optimize.

Although I certainly understand the OP's reasoning and for logistics and stocking purposes: it sure is easy to only buy one caliber... I most certainly agree with the quoted above. I have consolidated for .223/5.56 for my rifles. However, it's my absolute favorite rifle caliber I've ever shot and always will be. With all the load offerings today its extremely versatile. However, with pistols, I tried the same... once! And it didn't work for me as .38Special is my wife's favorite caliber to shoot (out of her Colt Agent), and 9mm is mine. 45acp is an oh so very close second to shoot and more likely a tie with the 9mm as being my favorite. And 5 years ago I really got into M&P pistols with the Apex triggers in .40caliber... Lastly, for woods carry where we kayak, fish, and hike in the Nantahala National Forrest... I like the pop of .45Super with lead hard cast bullets in a dedicated/converted Springfield 1911. Different jobs sometimes requires different calibers with pistols in my opinion. The one rule I have is to never get below 1K rounds stocked in your serious calibers. I start getting nervous when I have less than 1500 rounds of 9mm and .45acp so I keep those stacked pretty deep. .40S&W is significantly less and .38Special, only 200 rounds are kept stocked up for my wife.YMMV.

I've been trying to standardize around Glock 9mms and 5.56mm ARs for ammo and magazine compatibility. But the recent purchase of a Shield 9mm and a Glock 21 has kind of deviated from that plan.

I did.  Not including my .22 target pistol, which doesn't count, I shoot only 45ACP.  I sold everything else and consolidated to one reloadable caliber.  I have a SIG P220 and a half-dozen 1911s.  Can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot anything else.

I did something similar with rifles too, although I needed 3 for them - 223/5.56, 7.62x39, and 308/7.62x51 - thats it.

migrating more towards 9mm. However I still like the .45 and generally shoot it better than 9mm. I grew up with 1911's and still find the .45 a fantastic round. The wife prefers a revolver, so I still loading and keeping .38  on the shelf.

Maybe later, but one size still does not fit every need or want.

Somehow after 30 years of accumulation, I have at this moment:
Auto Pistol
22lr
380
9mm
45 ACP

Revolver
38Spl
357 magnum
45 AutoRim

Rifle
.22lr
5.56/.223
7.62/.308
7.62/39
357 Magnum

Shotgun
All 12 guage

I did get away from 45 LC and 460 S&W but I hope to get another 460 at some point (the 5" model) and another 45LC Blackhawk.  I would like to get a 629 at some point, one of the MIL/LEO program guns probably.  I have never had a 10mm or a Foady and probably never will.

For consolidation in the family the common denominator is a Glock 19 (three in the house and about 30 mags) and ARs, (six in the house and about 100 mags).  While consolidating ammunition, platform is also another consideration for magazines and spare parts commonality.  We do have other guns, and these are not anyone's "favorites" but it is what we have and that is better than not having.  Our stash of 9mm and 5.56 is an order of magnitude greater than the other calibers (still my supply of 308 and 45 would be considered adequate by most).

Rambling sorry, my point is that I see your idea about commonality and I agree.  I believe it also stretches to guns also.
