I've been looking into better carry rounds for my Glock 42 and Ruger LCP. I carry a 9mm most of the time but occasionally the smaller gun is nice.
Anyway, I have some Winchester Ranger and found that they didn't stand up quite as well as some other rounds in
the .380 ammo quest.
I was mainly looking at the test to see what worked the best and I could duplicate the best rounds with my own handloads.
The best rounds were loaded with 90gr XTP bullets between 789-891fps... more expansion and less penetration for the faster round, and just the opposite for the slower.
While looking into the load data trying to duplicate those results, I found that they are pretty weak... the lower end of which is barely enough to function my G42. Then I noticed that there is data available for 115gr .355 XTPs, where I can push heavier bullets just as fast as my targeted velocity while still being inside the safe pressure given by the reloading manuals.
In looking at
Hornady's XTP information, the window for velocity performance is exactly the same for both bullets.
If I can push a heavier bullet 100fps faster, I don't see why I shouldn't. Or am I overthinking this?
