Range Report:  Speer 147 Grain Gold Dot G2

I chronographed the Speer 147 grain Gold Dot G2 ammunition from a Gen 2 Glock 19 (with a factory original barrel) over an Oehler 35-P chronograph.  The load had a muzzle velocity of 960 FPS with a standard deviation of 8 FPS.
I evaluated the accuracy of the 147 grain G2 load from a distance of 25 yards.  A 10-shot group fired from my Noveske barreled Colt 6450 had an extreme spread of 0.82”.

A 10-shot group fired off the bench from my Heckler & Koch VP9 hand an extreme spread of 2.48”.

Hi Molon,
Thanks as always for your excellent reviews! Would you happen to know if the Speer G2 currently available from LE distributors is different than the G2 that they sold 12 months ago? I read something somewhere about the bullet having been modified to allow better expansion. It seems like I have seen the old stuff, presumably manufactured one year ago, being sold retail in bags of 1,000 rounds for practice/training purposes.
Thanks again,
John

I'll probably stick with my issued 124gr GDHP. Excellent range report, though, Molon!

Nice report Molon. Thank you!

So what's the word on this G2 ammo compared to the standard 147gr Gold Dots? Do they expand better, hit harder, punch deeper?

Old production on the left, new production on the right.

Speer recalled all the G2 rounds the FBI bought due to a manufacturing glitch which caused significant negative change in the terminal ballistics.

As far as I know the new G2 round is not yet available to the public. The only way to really tell is the new G2 round come in a plain white box.

That's IF you have an original version to compare it with. If you're in a store or show you may not have that comparison available.

skives are definately different.  The band(?) above the canelure looks deeper and more square as well.

OK, the skivvies do look different. Kinda like on the HST maybe. Which may indicate that it will actually open up.

I just tested some of the new stuff mine  has head stamp with 15, they passed right thru my 18 inch gel block, only found one that I dug the polymer out of the tip, that expanded....  Don't think the others expanded the track in gel was straight and tiny no real looks of expansion...

Nope don't use that any longer to expensive ... I use the clear ballistics gel, it's not the best but it works... Next time Itest the G2 I'll take two blocks,,so I can catch and recover the rounds... Which I think I'll be going out this Wenseday if weather is good ?

Clear Ballistics gel is not the scientific standard for terminal ballistic testing and any results obtained using it are invalid.

Why would you test a round's performance with anything other than proper gel?

Ooohh my bad I didn't realize I was doing this for professional reasons... And not just for my self,  Thanks for  a schooling in the use of proper ballistic gel  and proper ballistic gel usage... If my input don't help or hinders you, feel free to send me the proper materials I'll gladly take it..

While there seem to be small differences in typical JHP bullet behavior between the two, I wouldn't trust a bullet that was so damned "picky" that it wouldn't expand at all in bare Clear Ballistics Gel.  As it is, bare FBI spec gel over-represents typical expansion in people.  I can't see how there would be enough difference in hydraulic forces on the elastomeric tip between the two to make the difference between zero expansion and perfect expansion.  Clear Ballistics Gel expands other elastomeric tip bullets, so it can't be that big a deal.

Any theories as to how it would make such a big difference?
