I need to stock up on some 9mm carry ammo. I can't seem to find any Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P locally. What's another good carry ammo that I should try that is readily available? Thanks guys.

9mm HST 124 or 147, Fed Tac Bonded, FWin Ranger 124, 147, Speer 124 or 147, or Hornady Critical Duty (not critical defense).

Dots and HSTs. All 124 or 147 grn variety.
Some Ranger-T's too on occasion. |

Gold Dots 124gr +p.
Check the EE, I picked up a brick of 500 from a guy for a great price and I think he had more. |

I carry any LE spec ammo. I was in the business of selling all of the major brands for years before I caught on. All of the loads are made to meet or exceed the same spec. That spec is over kill for most situations. Often you need a digital calipers to measure the difference between the best and the worst ammo. Check your personal biases and brand loyalty and think about this.
The playing field is actually pretty level. All of the loads people have listed in this thread will do the job if the shooters does his. |

Winchester Defend and Hornady XTP both 147gr standard pressure.

Winchester Defend and Hornady XTP both 147gr standard pressure. View Quote Hornady XTP has caught my attention before because of the price and availability locally (as well as the fact that it's subsonic and heavy not unlike some of the best performing rounds out there right now). If you don't mind me asking, and please don't take this the wrong way, but may I ask you what you like about Hornady XTP? The reason I ask is not to call you out, or prompt a discussion to belittle or disagree with your ammo choices, I'm truly just interested in knowing what you like about the load. Feel free to ignore my question if it seems off-color or if you feel put on the spot. |

I bought a case of what I could find at the time- Rem 147gr Golden Sabre.

I still carry Winchester personal defense with the 147gr Olin super match bullet. It's an older bullet design but works well, is cheap enough to practice with, and easy enough to find locally for me.

Gold Dots and HST are my 1 and 1A, either order.
I will fall back on Critical Duty when those are in short supply.. |

You can find a lot of what these guys are carrying right now at stores and on the internets. I carry 147gr HST, but good luck finding it in standard pressure. |

Thanks for the replies, picked up some Federal HST 124gr yesterday.

I am a fan of Critical Defense. I practice with 115gr fmj's. 115gr 9mm critical defense has the same exact point of impact as my practice ammo.

GS will do the job, but so will FMJ in a pinch. Golden saber has always had jacket separation issues, and the bonded often over penetrates. I have seen far more instances of it having minimal to no expansion and over penetrating then it performing as advertised. There are far too many better options that are available in todays market. YMMV |

Federal 9BP. Standard pressure, $17 / box of 50.
No need to waste money on the dollar-a-shot hotdog stuff. They all do the same job when you put them in the right place. |

I will be receiving a case of Federal 9BP shortly to switch out the Critical Duty I've been using. You can buy it for $300 a case shipped and it's good performing ammunition.

9bple. That's a 115gr +p+ @1300fps. Its expansive force is enough to fragment the projectile while penetrating 14" into bg.

Dude. ALL handgun bullets fired into real people usually expand irregularly, if at all. And they usually penetrate all the way through, even after going impressive distances through big people. Those pretty lead-and-copper flowers you see in the bullet ads? Non-existent in the real world. I've seen too many .45 and 9mm bullets recovered from bodies. If they expand at all they just look mangled, with nose deformation rather than mushrooming, and jacket separation and fragmentation are usual. "Stopping power?" Non-existent. "Energy Transfer?" Myth. Bullets kill by poking holes in people. A hole is a hole; doesn't matter if its a 45/100 inch hole, or a 40/100 hole, or a 36/100 hole. Shooters worry about E = 1/2 mV squared. Forget that stuff. Study ANATOMY and PHYSIOLOGY. Real world bullet performance makes much more sense when you do. MEs can't tell what caliber or what kind of bullet unless the bullet is recovered. Entrance, exit and wound track don't reveal a thing. BOTTOM LINE: all the service calibers work the same; all bullets (including FMJ) work about the same; where you put it is the determining factor, not what it is. I carry 9mm and 9BP. |

I am going Winchester train and defend..seems silly not to IMHO.
Cant practice with HST. Shootingthebull410 has a great review here |

Speer Gold Dot 124 and 124+p is what I have stocked for carry. I'd like to buy a case or half case of 147gr Gold dot or HST if I could find it

124 Gold Dots in both standard and +P variety, or 147gr HST +P.
G26, G19, P228, Mk25 are the weapons. |

9BPLE I'd like to snag a case of this too, the +p+ LE is much better than the standard 9BP Read my post above; exactly how is a .36 hole in a ventricle "much better" if it's made by +p+, than if it's made by standard pressure stuff? You can get 9BP for $17 and 9BPLE for $20 at Ammunition Depot. Don't pay gun show prices for either one. |
