I've seen this at the local stores and was curious as to how it performed. Between the train and defend the velocities were very close to either other. Point of impact was spot on as well. However the Defend ammo, had very poor expansion and jacket separation. All I have is water jugs, but typically you see max expansion in water. We had plenty of jacket separation, and minimal expansion. For the cost, I'll stick to HST, Ranger T/PDX, Gold Dot :D

Defend has done really well in ballistics gel,  especially the 147 grain.  It is designed for shorter barrels.  Water jugs will tell you zero.

Yup. Water jug "testing" might as well be shooting dirt and checking performance.

They've typically always shown me max expansion rates. (HST has always shown very close expansion in water compared to gel and even pork tissue) If these are designed for the short barrels, then the extra 100+ fps I got from a 5" barrel caused jacket separation (which was evident in STB's results) and it seems that prevented further expansion.

It would seem to be marketed to the guys who rarely shoot their guns and shop the "Big Box" stores.

"Hey, I just bought this new gun from "Big Box".  I'll run fifty practice rounds thru it, and then carry this SD ammo".

And then never practice again.

Keep in mind I have never shot anyone with the Defend(essentially the replacement for PDX1) ammo but I do carry it and it does good is ballistic gel tests.  I would have no worries carrying the Win Defend, Fed HST, or Hornady XTP those are the loads I stick with.
