Thanks.  My mother carries an LCP, and while there were a few surprises, it helps confirm some of our thoughts on her ammunition choices for SD.

Gold dots are IMO always the answer when they can be had for carry.

I personally carry remington 102-grain golden saber in my lcp. It's the second most powerful standard-pressure load I've clocked out of it, beaten power-wise only by the USA FMJ-FP ball stuff, and then by only 3 ft/lbs. I figure it's the second-most powerful of the loads I've tested, and it uses the heaviest bullet of the factory loads I'm aware of. It has a decent reputation for expansion, but if it doesn't it's still the biggest, and almost the most-powerful, bullet I've found that aren't in the +P range.

I'm sure there are +P loads that are better, but I shoot this thing several hundred rounds a year and prefer to use standard-pressure loads in it.

Technically, there is no such thing as a +P .380ACP load; manufacturers may market a so-called +P load, but there is no SAAMI specification for one.

Having said that, I carry either FMJs or Hydra-Shoks in .380. Hydra-Shoks are known to expand poorly; in the case of the .380, that is not necessarily a bad thing, as it allows for more penetration. The JHP has sharper edges than an FMJ does, so it should do more damage to surrounding tissue, and if it expands a bit, that's a bonus.

The answer is simple; 380 ACP, any load for summer or as a back up for other seasons. None of this loads would do in winter clothes situation besides FMJ

FIFY. Expansion is worthless w/o sufficient penetration and Critical Defense combines adequate penetration w/mild expansion out of my wife's .380's.

Hydra Shok #1 or Gold Dot #2 if they function well in your gun.

You mean.. choose ammo based on well established performance parameters, actual testing, and clear analysis?  But.. that.. would.. actually make sense.

Barnes XTP loads or Hydrashok.

Hornady XTP.      It still expands, but penetrates more deeply than most defensive hollowpoints.

Underpenetration is a common problem with expanding .380.

That's why ball, XTP or Hydrashok are recommended.

BEST 380ACP SD LOAD= BALL

I use to carry a Mustang 380ACP when I carried a Colt 1911

I also tried other 380`s and a couple 32acp from Beretta and NNA

I never could shoot them accurately at 15Y let alone 25Y!

So I went back to a S&W J frame that I found highly accurate and easy to master if using the right model / grip/load.

Ive been told the G42 is highly accurate at distance .
