Economy of Scale.
There are more .45acp weapons out there to be fed, so more ammo is produced of each type in each run. Less downtime and set up time for the machinery equals cheaper production. |

When Heimat Sicherheit Dienst snatches up 450 million rounds of 40 S&W, that creates a demand against which lesser buyers must compete. Supply and demand.

40is a lot cheaper around here plus on the internet i just bought 10 boxes of federal hst white box from sg for 419.95 a box hard to find FMJ 45 for that. all local shops have quality 40 sd rounds for $28-$33 for quality 50 rd boxes of HST, Golden Sabers, Gold Dots, etc while the 45's will run you $34-$40 for similiar ammo. also range ammo is cheaper in 40 at local Wal mart you can get 40 for $16.99 a box for Fed Champiomn or WWB is $17.49 while 45s are $18.49 and $19.97 for same

.40S&W used to be right between 9mm and .45ACP in price but the relative cost seems to have climbed closer to that of .45ACP.
Of the three calibers, the cheapest I could find for new production ammunition was: 20.6 cents per round for 9mm 27.9 cents per round for .40S&W 31.2 cents per round for .45ACP ...less than 10 years ago I was able to buy 100 rounds of .40S&W from Walmart for just under $15.00. |

Box of 50 of .40S&W FC 180gr is $16.97 at WM. .45 ACP FC 230gr is $17.45 /50. If you can find the 100rd Valuepacks of the FC it was $28.99

A month or two ago I bought 230gr Magtech .45acp , brass cased for $13.95/50 or thereabouts, ( $13 something ), from Palmetto State Armory. Honestly, I don't buy a lot of pistol ammo. I load everything I shoot and only bought that to break in a new 1911 and because I needed some brass for my 230gr XTP carry loads. I really don't pay attention to the price difference in ammo. Mostly .45acp and 9mm is all I look at when I look. I sometimes pick up some 9mm for friends or something. |

.40 is $5.00 cheaper a box than .45 at my shop. Where are you getting your ammo? Might want to look elsewhere.

I was just looking at ammo prices in walmart yesterday to decide what handgun I want. 9mm was like 17$ for a box of 100, .40 was I think 27$ for 100, and .45 was $23 for 50. So .40 is still cheaper than .45 where I am.

Bought some .40 ball yesterday for $.26/round at J & C Sales.
Also, bought some 9mm ball for $.199/round at SGAmmo. |

I'm mainly talking about practice or ball ammo. When it comes to premium HP stuff, it's pretty much a wash between 9mm, .40 and .45, at least in my area. Yeah the 9mm and .40 can be a little cheaper, but not enough to make much difference in testing for reliability and keeping a "break glass in emergency" supply on hand.
However, finding practice ammo is different. In my area, 45 and 9mm is much more prevalent in supply and variety, and .45 can often be found cheaper as it is quite often on sale like 9mm. The .40 S&W rarely is. Maybe it's apples to oranges brand wise, but I can find practice .45 easier and $20 - $30 cheaper per case online than .40. Again, it's not enough to really make a big difference, I just thought .40 would be somewhere in between 9 and .45, not really close or more than .45ACP. |

The best thing I did was to buy a reloader from Dillon , Square Deal press for handgun ammo. It allowed me to shot every single day . It help with muscle memory and shrinking my group size. Plus its fun to reload. And its very simple to do. I also have a very very cheap Lee turret press also. It loads just as accurate ammo as the Dillon SD. |

Reloading is an option if I get a .40 or .45.

If it does go up it is because I have switched to all 40 S&W pistols. Just like when I switch lanes. That lane automatically becomes the slower lane.

I always say 40 is the least popular of the popular calibers. I sell some of my 40 cal ammo just above cost to keep it moving.

I have never seen .45 cheaper than .40, maybe a 50 rd box of 45 vs 100 pack of the .40
