I have a 10mm 1911 that needs a extractor fir I bought one and tried to bend it but have way to much of a gap I am looking to send it to a smith that does decent work at a decent price. Can anyone recommend one that is not back logged months? Also would I need to send the whole gun or just the slide?

This is what I seem to be dealing this is with the extractor bent to the oping it is hard to get into the slide. Seems as if the hook of the extractor will not come close enough to the breech face?

You usually need to file alittle material from the "pad" just below the hook.

The correct tension on the extractor is that it should hold a loaded round when the slide is held horizontal. There is a problem that I see in your photos. The nose of the extractor is hitting the case of the round. That is a no-no.
The groove of the extractor should have a small radius where the rim of the case slides under the hook as the slide is going forward. I can't tell from your photos but it looks like the the body of the extractor is extending beyond the breechface. That is also a no-no.
For a gunsmith you would just need to call and see if they could accommodate you. Fitting an extractor is not that big of a job. The postage(ups or Fed-Ex) to mail the firearm will be in excess of $100.00. You can have an FFL dealer mail it using USPS and save some money if you are close to someone with an FFL.

You may have bought the wrong extractor. I don't know for sure if that is possible.

If you bought it from a reputable dealer, they will make it good.

Post clearer photos of the slide opening so we can better view.
Also of the rear of the slide. You may have done something different there.

Roy

PS: Extractors are easy to modify to fit the slide/brass etc. But a good repair book is a must.

The 2 volume set by Kuhnhausen is the best.

If you do end up going to a gunsmith, have them "tune" an extra one for you.  1911 extractors will wear out, and when yours does you'll be here again.  You are already paying the parts and labor for an extractor tuning, so have them tune a duplicate you can just drop in down the road.  Saves you a good bit of money in the long run.

Did you buy a 45ACP extractor ?

you need a 40/10mm...like this...

tuning an extractor is something every 1911 owner should learn to do

The distance from the hook to the breech face should be about .070 of an inch which is a pretty good gap. sometimes when you have the correct tension the extractor will be a little difficult to go through the extractor tunnel. The tip of the extractor hook should not contact the case but the contact should be from the case rim contacting the flat on the extractor.

Skip the gunsmith. Order a Aftec extractor. Read the instructions and install it. You will then have the best Piece of modern technology ever made for a 1911.
