Generations are generally applied to the metal frame guns. Your 59 would be first the 669 or 439/459 series second and the four digit model numbers example 3913 third. That is where it ends. The polymer framed guns are entirely different entity

I see that everyone wants to forget the Sigma. Stop at the 3rd Gens and start over at the M&P Series.

There are 3 Generations of S&W metal frame autos. The polymer guns are a different story.
