So after years of religiously shooting Glocks, 1911s, Hi Powers, and Beretta's, I decided to branch out a few months ago with a CZ. Which was a good choice.

Having never been drawn to S&W products, I recently started looking into their line up. I have no interest in more polymer framed guns.

But the 5906 for some reason has my interest. No longer in production, they seem reasonably priced and mags appear readily available.

The mag safety doesn't appeal to me. I haven't researched whether or not its easily removable like in the case of my Hi Power.

So should I go for it?

They are good all around guns and built like tanks but you should know that S&W no longer supports the 3rd gen guns in any way.  So all parts and mags have to come from outside factory sources.

I own several 3rd gen S&W's. They are spectacular pistols. Reliable, accurate and tough as nails. I say go for the 5906.

I like the Smith nines, have owned a number of them over the years.  The mag disconnect is a non-issue.  I've never removed one and see no point in doing so.

The all steel 5906 is a tank. I actually liked the heft of it over the alloy framed 5903. I really regret letting mine go.

Like others have said, parts will be difficult to find but it should last a long time. The only issue I really worry about with an older Smith is replace the springs with new ones when you get. Most people will never 'shoot out' their guns. If you want it, get it. Then check on Wolff Springs and then get as many springs as you can replace. I had a older smith and replaced most of the springs myself without any special tools.

Yeah I saw that pic in the GD forum. I have a similar obsession with Glocks and 1911s.

The 5906 was the Honolulu PD issued sidearm for about 20 years before it was replaced by the G17 gen4.  None of my HPD friends complained about the 5906 functioning but they all disliked the weight of it on their belts

I replaced all the springs in mine today.  I used the Wolff service pack.  Polished some of the internals as well, looking forward to trying out next next weekend.    There's an excellent youtube video series on the full dissassembly that helped me throught it

The 'official' way is to drift out the rear sight and remove the spring and polymer plunger

or you can dig the polymer plunger out of the bottom of the slide with a pick, along with the spring

Good to know. When I make my purchase that will be coming out as a new spring kit goes in. I may have the sights removed to do a cerakote job anyway.

Interesting comments on the 5906.  Owned one for many years but after turning 70 opted for smaller, lighter pistols.   This type Smith pistol was made for many years with the safety activated by pushing up for fire and down for safe with hammer drop.

It's interesting that no one on this thread mentioned the method of fire and safe positions being a problem.  However, on this and other sites, one of the most common complaints about the SR22 is the way the safety operates, like the 5906, but they desire a 1911 style operation.  It's like the safety operation on the SR22 is a new design concept.

My M&P 22 and 22c operate like the 1911, up for safe and down for fire.

I had a 4006 which was well built but heavy as hell.  I could never get good accuracy out of it and sold it for a Glock 35. However, the 9mm may be an entirely different animal.

Yes, go for it.  Mag safety is a breeze to remove (or not).

I don't carry 9mm much but here's my 5906 in action.  Completely reliable and unmodified.  It serves as my sort of beater gun; one I toss in a bag when I'm doing work at the new house or whenever it's not convenient to carry.  Sometimes I'll stuff it AIWB mexican carry if I'm walking down to the mailbox and back.

Good feedback.

As owners of the 5906 and its relatives, what would you pay in the current market for NIB or well cared for models?

Ive seen the heavily holstered and handled guns priced between 350 and 450, due to government surplus they seem most plentiful.

I don't see the appeal of this gun personally.  The rear sight is hideous on most models, slide mounted controls are , wraparound polymer grips that are just Meh...to each their own I guess, but not a gun I would seek especially since even the original maker has given up caring about them...so much for the S&W lifetime warranty.  Not cool in my book.

I won't be getting the hooded adjustable sight.

Bu the 3913 is a dream to shoot. Out of the entire line up of 3rd Gens. S&W hit it out of the park with that little compact.

But if I would get any 5906....  it would be one of these three.
