Ok so here is the deal. My birthday is coming up on the 29th. And I have decided to get an older Smith autoloader. When I say older, I mean the numbered series guns 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, etc, etc. Only rule, it has to be 9mm. Other than that go crazy. Tell me the one you would own if you could only own one.
Addon: also if you could give me a fair price range for the model you suggest that would greatly help my hunt. |

The gen 3 smiths are great guns. I have a 5906. It might be heavy to for a carry gun. It looks over built. It would probably last for ever. Mag can be found easily. Mecgar or factory. Their are ex leo guns and civilian guns out their. I seen a super nice one the other day for $400.
Most do not like the slide mounted safety/decocker. I am not a fan but just train with it. Its all about training. When you get one be sure to post some pic here so we can see the new addition. If you every want to go to 45 the 4506 is a great pistol as will. But the 9mm smiths are great shooters. Have fun with the search |
|
I prefer the earlier ( a smith third gen wod be at most 30 years old and doesn't come close to older in my book!) I like the 39- most comfortable grip ever!

The S&W 5903 has the alloy frame but Stainless Slide of the 5906. I carried a 5904 blued 9 MM and they are great pistols. My Department issued 5904 & 6904 (compact 13 shot) and the Officer could choose either. I also carried the 439 and a 39-2 both were 8 shot with the very comfortable thinner grip. The real sleepers are the 459 second generation which can be found on GB for good prices. Don't discount the 915, 910, 909 or 908 value series pistols. These were cosmetically cheaper to produce and sell and used polymer instead of steel sights. The value series pistols can be found cheap but they are serviceable good shooters and take the same mags.

I like the 59 series. Specifically I am looking at the 5903, 5906, and 5926. Does anyone know the difference between the 5906 and 5926? How does the alloy frame compare to the steel? More desirable? Lighter weight?
|
|
Lighter weight not sure how much.
Not sure about durability. Maybe less that steel. I am sure it's good for several thousand round. Probably if you can afford to wear it out by shooting it you can afford to replace it. |

My first duty gun (and first handgun I ever owned myself) was a second hand S&W 59. It was big, heavy and "primitive" compared to today's auto's but I LOVED that gun. It was a great shooting gun and extremely reliable. I foolishly sold it to buy my next duty gun and not a day passes that I'm not sick to my stomach that it's gone. I searched for years to at least find a look alike but it was an unusual looking version. It had a matte aluminum bottom and a nickel top that had it's "shine" removed. I'm not sure how they did it or if it was factory but it wasn't nearly as shiny as those I've seen in photos. I saw ONE just like it that sold online but it was sold a couple hours before I saw the ad. ACK!!
OP, you'll be happy with any of the Gen 3 guns. The 59xx series seem to be the most popular but they are all excellent guns. I'd own one or two of each if I could but for now, just replacing my 59 is my goal. |
|
As much as I like metal Smiths (I have a 39-2) I have to point out that those POS at Smith are discontinuing support for these fine pistols. The parts supplies are drying up for them.

I think I'm getting old because I find myself despising the M&P and other SW plastic guns, but loving the 659 and 5906.

Quoted: I have several, my wife has a few of her own, and they are IMO great pistols in their own right. My single favorite of the bunch, if it has to be a 9mm, is my 5906TSW. (No pic handy, I'll try to rectify that tonight...) OP, don't be afraid to buy one in good mechanical shape but with a very worn finish. I picked up a cheap (well south of $200) model 910 a few years back that looked like a dog but was otherwise solid and reliable. I had it coated, changed out the grip panels and sights, and it spiffed up quite nicely... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/HardShell/RWB%20-%20Pistols/FDESampW910frontleftobscured_zpsf2fb29c3.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/HardShell/RWB%20-%20Pistols/FDESampW910right_zpseb8a36a8.jpg Good huntin'! Anyone have a Tac9 they know is for sale?
It's really my birthday. |

They keep a great supply of used pistols on hand and I can't remember going in there the past few years when they didn't have at least a couple of the TSWs in stock. They do sell/ship to FFLs out of state. It's where I bought mine, FWIW. |

You know you have a problem when you start having doubles (and triples) of the same exact model. The plus side is that you then have a reason to buy an air compressor, build a blast cabinet, and make them look brand new for a fraction of the price a professional cerakote or bead-blast job would cost. The down side is that removing the rear sights will destroy your punches or break your sight-pusher. |

For some reason I've lately been wanting with a 469 /669 or 6904.

My 469 was 100% reliable but the 6904 is a superior design, better grip, better sights and usually a better trigger pull. The only advantage to the 469 is they are cheaper on GB. |

I can't stand the S&W M&P plastic pistols. They're ugly, blatant Glock rip offs, and just plain nasty guns.
I wish S&W would bring back the steel frames guns. Those things are beautiful. 5906 Tactical 9 is my unicorn gun right now. |

The TSW line was awesome.... the PC line was fantastic... the M&P line is shit.

I wouldn't. Not if you plan to shoot it much.
Way up top the fellow posted Trigger Return Spring. He was trying to help you. The four digit series uses a two leaf U shaped beryllium copper spring attached to the top of the trigger for reset/return. They break leaves off every 2000 rounds +/-. Serious work to repair and parts are made of unobtainium. Anything modern you buy will give you better service from Glock to Canik to XD to damn near anything. |

I actually sold off the light awhile back. I figured if I really wanted to have a light on it I could put the S&W key in one of my TLR-1's.

Seems like whenever I hear about a broken trigger spring it's in either a .45 or 10mm pistol. Not saying they don't break in the other calibers, just seems less common.

Sorry. 6906 ate three return springs in three years carrying on training cycle. Sold the POS after last fix with disclosure.
The 4506AS I had was replaced for not feeding. The replacement was replaced for ejection and feeding issues. The third gun would not extract if clean. S&W gave up and bought the third one and 12 mags back for MSRP. If you followed the xxxx series problems, the first .45acp was in concept a new 645 version. The second was a modification of the NEW xxxx 10mm design supposedly from scratch. The third was a new .45acp version. Good luck buying xxxx guns if you really use them. |
