I just bought one and WTF is up with the slide release? It takes 2 thumbs to release the damn slide. Will it loosen over time?

Mine has loosened up a bit with use.
It is still a heavier release than a lot of my other pistols.
I tend to slingshot my slides so I don't notice it much.

Cool, I was just making sure mine didn't have a issue. Do they make extended slide releases for these pistols?

No they don't.

When you use a full magazine, its quite a bit easier to use the slide release versus when the magazine is empty.

I've never noticed it, as said above, better to "slingshot" the slide.

I slingshot everything but Kahr pistols.
Kahr specifies to use the release, Smith doesn't.

Anyone able to get the Shield to auto forward on mag insert?  My full size and compact both do it easily, haven't been able to get the Shield to do it yet.
Guessing the stiff release is to thank for that.

Is that a feature? I always thought that was a malfunction

Please watch "Powerstroke".

Also, when you insert the mag of a M&P pistol at a 45* angle, the slide will release itself.

Damn I wish my slide release was that loose. Maybe if I hammer the shit out of it for a year or 2 it might Losen up like his old worn out M&P.
The first video was great. Thanks.

It isn't a slide release, it is a slide lock. It isn't intended to be used to release a locked slide but instead to lock the slide back. It explains this in the owners manual.

Mine took both thumbs to operate when it was new, now after MANY releases I can do it with one thumb.

When ever the slide stop vs slide release argument comes up.... All I think is

OP it's very stiff out of the box. It should get better with use.

Probably because it was never intended to be an easy way to release the slide since it is intended to simply lock the slide back. Is that a foreign concept? People asking why X doesn't work the way they think it is supposed to...well...that's not how it's intended to function.

Mine loosened up enough to release the slide between 200-250 rounds.

Try using your purse.

No, but seriously, mine was rough out of the box too. Releasing it without an empty mag helps a lot. About 1,000 rounds helps as well.  It'll lighten up.

Two full sized 9's that took two thumbs to release.

Not weird to wonder about it. Never known any other to be that burred inside.

It smoothens up, not to the point you want to use it like that ever.

I like the slide releasing on a new magazine. Speeds things up. It was originally a malfunction that they changed into a feature and marketed it as such.
